Inaugural Program Director – Internal Medicine Residency Program

Beacon Health System is seeking an inspiring, innovative, and collaborative physician leader to serve as the founding Program Director for a new Internal Medicine Residency Program in Elkhart, Indiana. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of graduate medical education by building a 10-10-10 community-based residency program from inception within one of the region’s leading integrated health systems.

As the inaugural Program Director, you will have the unique ability to establish the vision, culture, and educational framework of a program designed to train the next generation of Internal Medicine physicians while addressing the healthcare needs of Northern Indiana. Partnering closely with health system leadership, physician faculty, and community stakeholders, you will lead all aspects of program development, including ACGME accreditation, curriculum design, faculty recruitment and mentorship, resident education, scholarly activity, and continuous program innovation.

This role is ideal for a physician educator who is passionate about teaching, mentorship, and program development; possesses the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to build a residency program from the ground up; and is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, wellness, inclusivity, and patient-centered care.

Position Highlights

  • Designed for a physician passionate about medical education, this role provides approximately 80% protected administrative and educational time to build, lead, and innovate a new residency program, complemented by 20% clinical practice to remain engaged in patient care and resident teaching.
Essential Responsibilities
Program Development & Accreditation
  • Lead all aspects of program development and ACGME accreditation.
  • Develop and maintain program policies, educational objectives, competency-based curriculum, and assessment systems.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME, ABIM, institutional, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in institutional GME committees and strategic planning initiatives.
  • Prepare for and oversee accreditation site visits and ongoing program evaluation.
Educational Leadership
  • Design and implement a rigorous and innovative Internal Medicine curriculum.
  • Foster a culture of inquiry, professionalism, accountability, and lifelong learning.
  • Develop clinical rotations and educational experiences across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Promote scholarly activity among faculty and residents.
  • Support resident mentorship, coaching, career development, and wellness initiatives.
Faculty & Clinical Leadership
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-quality teaching faculty.
  • Provide faculty development focused on teaching, feedback, evaluation, and mentorship.
  • Collaborate with hospital leaders, specialists, and ambulatory practices to ensure outstanding clinical training experiences.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice consistent with program needs and specialty expertise.
Resident Recruitment & Culture
  • Lead resident recruitment, selection, and onboarding efforts.
  • Create an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
  • Establish a resident culture emphasizing teamwork, service, compassion, and clinical excellence.
  • Promote resident leadership and engagement within the health system and community.
Qualifications
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certification in Internal Medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • Minimum of three years of educational and/or administrative experience within an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Indiana.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical care, teaching, mentorship, and leadership.
  • Strong understanding of ACGME accreditation standards and competency-based medical education.
  • Experience in curriculum development, faculty development, and program administration preferred.
  • Prior leadership experience as Associate Program Director, Core Faculty, Clerkship Director, or Program Director strongly preferred.
