Job description

About Constellation

Constellation is an independent research center that brings together people throughout the AI safety ecosystem to accelerate insight, research, and talent through better cooperation. Unlike a conference or summit, Constellation operates continuously, in the form of a physical workspace as well as conference‑style talks, workshops, and training bootcamps. Continuous operation allows for relationships and conversations to develop over time, meaningfully fostering trust, collaboration, and shared insight. It also makes Constellation a natural field‑building hub by rapidly inspiring, orienting, and connecting people who are newer to the field. Based in Berkeley, CA, our shared workspace hosts over 200 people per week across dozens of AI safety organizations in nonprofits, academia, industry, and government. Hundreds of other researchers spend time at Constellation for shorter visits each year. We believe this is the strongest and highest‑output network of AI safety researchers in the world; dozens of participants in past Constellation programs have gone on to safety‑focused roles at companies such as METR, Redwood Research, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and the US and UK Safety Institutes.

About the Role

As the Program Coordinator on the Convening Team, you will play a critical, full‑time role focused on understanding and improving the experience of our community members. This is a hands‑on programs role where you’ll spend time with members to understand their needs, design improvements to our programs and spaces, and help run events. You’ll work closely with our operations team (who handle day‑to‑day logistics) to ensure our programs truly serve the researchers and organizations we support. This role is perfect for someone who cares deeply about the AI safety mission, loves understanding what makes people tick, designing better experiences, and wants to learn about AI safety while building foundational program management skills.

Key Responsibilities
User Research, User Experience, and Strategic Analysis
  • Spend time with members to understand their experiences, needs, and what helps them do their best work
  • Conduct user interviews and gather feedback through conversations, surveys, and observation
  • Provide strategic problem‑solving and rapid response to emerging community needs, using triage frameworks to prioritize interventions by impact and urgency
  • Identify patterns in what’s working well and where members experience friction
  • Make recommendations for improvements to programs, spaces, and member experience based on what you learn
  • Partner with the operations team to implement experience enhancements
Community Experience, Design, and Implementation
  • Help design and refine the end‑to‑end member experience, including onboarding flows, space utilization, community engagement approaches, and program touchpoints
  • Test and iterate on new program ideas and experience improvements
  • Think strategically about how our programs can better serve affiliate needs
  • Track feedback and learnings to inform ongoing program development
Membership & Community Building
  • Help evaluate membership applications, considering fit and theory of change
  • Support the new member experience to ensure people feel welcomed and connected
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen community connections and engagement
Events Support
  • Assist with planning and executing events, including technical workshops for AI researchers and educational sessions for policymakers
  • Help with event strategy, communications, and logistics coordination
  • Provide support during events to ensure attendee experience is excellent
Communications
  • Help maintain the website and create content that showcases our programs
  • Support external communications to ensure our work is well represented
Skills & Experience

  • You think AI might have transformative effects in the coming years, and want to support the people working to ensure it goes well
  • You have a strong service mindset and are genuinely curious about understanding people’s needs and experiences
  • You're a good listener who can draw out insights from conversations and translate them into actionable improvements You enjoy thinking about user experience and designing better ways for programs to serve people
  • You can effectively prioritize and triage competing needs, balancing urgency with impact to focus on what matters most
  • You're comfortable talking with researchers, executives, and policymakers, and can build trust across different audiences You have strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • You're organized and can manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • You're thoughtful and strategic, but also practical about implementation You demonstrate initiative and creativity in problem‑solving
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity and enjoy working in a dynamic, evolving environment
  • You're a quick learner who’s excited to understand complex topics and learn about AI safety research
  • Bonus: You have experience in program coordination, community management, UX research, event planning, or related fields
