Job description

Founded in 2010, Cake4Kids bakes and delivers homemade birthday cakes to underserved youth ages 1–24, including children in foster care, experiencing homelessness, living at the poverty line or recovering from abuse or trafficking. Working through partnerships with human and social service agencies, our volunteer-powered network of chapters spans the country and has delivered tens of thousands of custom treats, showing kids in difficult circumstances that they matter and deserve to be celebrated. Cake4Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

Job Summary

Applicants must be located near one of our volunteer chapters, but location in Northern Virginia is preferred. This is an hourly part-time shift based position from 9 AM - 1 PM EST Monday- Friday.

Cake4Kids is seeking a personable and detail-oriented multi-tasker to manage operations and administrative support for the Cake4Kids program team. You will be the face of Cake4Kids for our volunteers, the agencies we support, and the general public. Working from home, you will help keep Cake4Kids’ program operations running smoothly to ensure that every youth receives a birthday smile. To accomplish this, you’ll deftly shift between managing online databases, taking phone calls, handling emails, and internal chats, and you will make important judgment calls with minimal supervision.

This role is part-time and is a job-share position with three other program team members. The hours for this position are 4 consecutive hours from Monday–Friday, from 9 AM - 1 PM EST, with an additional 1-hour staff meeting every week. This position is home-based and subject to a ‘bring your own device’ policy as Cake4Kids does not have a physical office location.

  • Coordinate with agency partners and volunteers to ensure the baking and delivery process is smooth
  • Review photos of delivered cakes to ensure adherence to Cake4Kids guidelines

  • Have baking skills or experience
  • Must be available to work the assigned shift on a consistent and reliable basis
  • Have reliable access to a computer and high-speed internet sufficient to perform the duties of the position
  • Are extremely detail-oriented and observant of tiny details, as accuracy is critical to the success of the organization and for the agencies, families, and youth who are counting on us
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of and respect for diversity and multicultural sensitivity
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and are very comfortable dealing with people via email, over the phone, and in person
  • Can strike the right tone and adapt quickly in communications with many different types of stakeholders based on different situations and contexts, including having to deliver bad news or provide constructive feedback
  • Are proficient with detailed data entry and can spot even the tiniest of errors
  • Can communicate status updates for complicated issues clearly and concisely via written updates, email, chat, and phone
  • Have the ability to effectively prioritize competing tasks and meet deadlines

  • Are technology savvy – we use a variety of systems and tools such as Salesforce, Outlook (email and calendaring), Google Drive, Slack, and Zoom
Qualifications

You work well as part of a team but also excel at working independently and making important judgment calls. You’re great at relationship-building with both internal and external stakeholders. You must be able to maintain progress on your core tasks throughout the day while managing frequent interruptions such as phone calls and unexpected urgent emails. You are technology savvy. You communicate clearly, thoughtfully, and tactfully in both written and verbal communications.
