Job description

About SNI, CAPH, and the Public Health Care Systems We Serve

The California Health Care Safety Net Institute (SNI) partners with California’s public health care systems to optimize and transform the ecosystem of care, providing high-quality, patient-led, and equitable care for all. Together with our advocacy partner, the California Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems , SNI works to strengthen care delivery systems by shaping the policies and programs that drive improvement and creating a community where system leaders can exchange ideas and advance shared priorities.

SNI and CAPH represent California’s 17 public health care systems , which include the county-owned or affiliated systems and the University of California academic medical centers. These systems serve as the foundation of the state’s safety net, delivering care to all who need it, regardless of insurance coverage, immigration status, ability to pay, or other circumstances. Public health care systems primarily serve people from historically marginalized communities, including persons of color, individuals experiencing financial hardship or homelessness, and individuals with complex health and social needs.

Although SNI and CAPH are separate legal entities, they function day-to-day as a matrix organization, with SNI contributing to CAPH’s policy and advocacy efforts, CAPH offering technical expertise to SNI’s programs, and the organizations working together to achieve shared goals for our member systems.

SNI and CAPH are committed to advancing equity and serve as an Equal Opportunity Employer with a strong commitment to racial, cultural, and ethnic diversity. Qualified applicants of all races, people with all abilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.

SNI’s Programs

SNI brings together systems’ leaders from clinical, quality, data, finance, and operational areas through in-person and virtual convenings, communities of practice, webinars, and our CAPH/SNI Annual Conference. By creating a community where leaders can exchange ideas and problem-solve, SNI helps systems work through complex issues and apply successful strategies from peers in their own settings.

Beyond these convenings, SNI creates practical resources and content to surface and share what is working across the field. These include lessons learned briefs, roadmaps, case studies, and articles drawn from member systems’ experiences.

Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities

The Program Coordinator plays an essential support role in planning and implementing SNI’s programs. Working closely with SNI and CAPH staff, the Coordinator will:

  • Support the design and delivery of in-person and virtual learning events for health system leaders across SNI’s program areas (e.g., protecting Medicaid coverage and access, strengthening health equity, improving cost effectiveness and efficiency).
  • Coordinate end-to-end event logistics, including developing and managing workplans, scheduling speaker prep calls, creating and administering pre-event surveys and post-event evaluations, and providing day‑of support during events, among other duties.
  • Work with the program team, particularly the team lead, to identify systems’ needs and develop program content and materials.
  • Lead the Quality Leaders Awards ceremony and luncheon during CAPH/SNI’s Annual Conference.
    • Prepare and disseminate the call for applications and organize submissions.
    • Coordinate the judging process by helping to identify external judges, scheduling judging calls, and reviewing and scoring submissions with the judges’ panel.
    • Oversee the awards ceremony and luncheon at the annual conference, including serving as the point of contact for awardees, preparing the SNI Board Chair to moderate, and managing all aspects of the day‑of event, among other duties.
    • Additionally, support the annual conference team in identifying and preparing conference speakers.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as scheduling meetings, summarizing meeting notes, and printing and compiling meeting materials.
  • Complete other duties and projects as needed.
Required Knowledge and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a health-related field, or commensurate experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience, which may include internships and fellowships. Experience working in a health care setting and/or public agency a plus.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a timely, organized manner with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong writing and editing skills. Adept at translating complex information into accessible language for a variety of audiences.
  • Fluent in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Zoom. Preferred experience working with WordPress, Constant Contact, and/or online collaborative tools, such as Miro.
  • Comfortable using AI tools to improve work quality and productivity while exercising independent thinking and ownership of final work.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to interact professionally and courteously with health system leadership, consultants, and peers.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment, learn on the fly, and work effectively in teams, as well as independently.
  • Understanding of California’s health care landscape, particularly programs that serve Medicaid and uninsured patients, a plus.

CAPH/SNI operates in a hybrid work environment, with two required in‑person days (Monday and Wednesday) at the office in Oakland, CA for those living 40 miles or less from the office; one required in‑person day (Monday) for those living farther away. The remaining days are conducted remotely.

This role requires occasional in‑state travel, including overnight travel for in‑person convenings and the annual conference.

The starting salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000. SNI offers an extremely competitive benefits package, as well as opportunities to attend professional conferences and participate in professional development trainings.
