About Courageous Kids

Courageous Kids creates joyful, family-centered experiences that uplift children facing life-threatening illnesses with compassionate support, fostering moments of connection, and ensuring the whole family feels supported, encouraged, and never alone.

Through special events, outings, tickets, experiences, and opportunities to simply have fun together, we give our Courageous Kids and their families something exciting to look forward to. These moments create positive distraction, connection, community, and joyful memories during incredibly difficult seasons.

Our support extends beyond the child. We believe the whole family deserves opportunities for joy, belonging, and connection. Once a family becomes part of Courageous Kids, they remain part of our community even as treatment ends or circumstances change.

As Courageous Kids continues to grow, we are building the team and infrastructure needed to reach more families, create even bigger experiences, and strengthen the relationships that make our community so special.

About the Role

Courageous Kids is seeking a compassionate, organized, creative, and relationship-focused Program Coordinator to help lead the family experience and coordinate the events and programs at the heart of our mission.

This role will serve as a primary point of contact for Courageous Kids families, supporting them from the initial application and onboarding process through ongoing events, communications, and relationship-building. The Program Coordinator will also plan and execute family events, gather feedback, track participation and impact, and help ensure that families feel welcomed, informed, and connected.

This is an excellent entry-level or early-career opportunity for someone interested in social work, nonprofit programs, event planning, family services, community engagement, or a related field. The Program Coordinator will work directly with the Executive Director and gain hands-on experience in nonprofit programming, family engagement, impact measurement, events, and community partnerships.

The position is approximately 20 hours per week and will include a mix of remote work and in-person event attendance throughout the Metro Detroit area. Because this role works directly with families and hosts approximately 22 Courageous Kids events each year, reliable availability and transportation for scheduled events is an important part of the position.

Responsibilities
Family Intake, Welcome, and Ongoing Support
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Courageous Kids families throughout their relationship with the organization.
  • Manage new family applications and ensure required information and documentation are complete.
  • Coordinate eligibility verification with Courageous Kids' physician board member and the family's treating physician or medical provider, as appropriate.
  • Communicate with families throughout the application and approval process in a compassionate, timely, and clear manner.
  • Conduct orientation and welcoming for newly approved families.
  • Coordinate welcome kits and other introductory materials for new families.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential family records and contact information.
  • Maintain regular communication with families to help ensure they feel informed, supported, and connected.
Family Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Courageous Kids families.
  • Work closely with the Courageous Family Advisory Council to gather feedback, identify needs, and maintain strong relationships with the families we serve.
  • Proactively seek suggestions and feedback from families regarding programs, events, communications, and overall family experience.
  • Help identify ways Courageous Kids can better serve families and strengthen their sense of belonging and connection.
  • Help identify meaningful milestones, family stories, and opportunities for additional support or engagement.
Family Event Planning and Execution
  • Plan and coordinate Courageous Kids family events and experiences throughout the year.
  • Create family-facing event invitations, announcements, reminders, and program updates.
  • Manage Program budget and solicit in-kind donations and discounts pertaining to family events.
  • Develop new and creative event ideas while maintaining popular traditions that families value.
  • Coordinate event logistics including dates, venues, activities, volunteers, food, transportation needs, registration, supplies, volunteers, and other operational details.
  • Communicate and coordinate with host organizations, community partners, venues, vendors, and other event partners.
  • Manage family invitations, RSVPs, reminders, event updates, and follow-up communications.
  • Attend and help lead Courageous Kids family events to ensure a welcoming, organized, and positive experience.
  • Help anticipate accessibility, medical, dietary, sensory, and other family needs when planning events.
  • Track event attendance, cancellations, waitlists, and overall participation.
  • Conduct post-event follow-up and gather feedback from families.
  • Maintain event calendars, planning documents, checklists, and program records.
Program Tracking, Evaluation, and Impact
  • Help identify family stories, quotes, photos, and program highlights that can support broader organizational storytelling, with appropriate permissions.
  • Track family participation, event attendance, program reach, and other key program data.
  • Help develop and administer family surveys, feedback forms, and other tools to measure satisfaction and impact.
  • Maintain accurate records of program participation and family engagement.
  • Analyze family feedback and participation trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Help measure and communicate the impact of Courageous Kids programs.
  • Prepare basic program reports, summaries, and statistics for the Executive Director and Board as needed.
  • Support the collection of data and family stories used in grants, sponsorship reports, donor communications, and organizational planning.
Program Administration and Organizational Support
  • Because this role works closely with Courageous Kids families and programs, occasionally support meetings, reports, and conversations with funders, sponsors, and community partners.
  • Support fundraising events and other organizational activities as assigned. (i.e. assist with minor event logistics, speak at events to donors, mingle with supporters, etc.)
