Position: Program Assistant - Medically Fragile Student (Grant) (JHHS - CLS) 37.5 hrs./wk. Grade 5

Salary: Grade 5, Step 1, $26.82. Salary schedule listed in the ESPA agreement linked here.

Assignment: 10 Month, Temporary & Grant Funded Assignment effective August 11, 2025. Contract may be renewed annually pending grant funding.

General Responsibilities:

This role involves close interaction with staff, students, and parents/guardians, focusing on implementing specialized or vocational education programs. The Instructional Assistant works under the direction of a licensed teacher and must react appropriately in crisis situations, demonstrating initiative and creativity.

The employee works within established systems and procedures, exhibiting organizational skills, independent judgment, and confidentiality. The Program Assistant/Medically Fragile individual must show initiative and work collaboratively to achieve the district's mission. Focus on the Career Life Skills Program (CLS).

Qualifications:
  • Must have or obtain State and NCLB Approved Paraprofessional designation per Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
  • Must have physical ability to lift/move supplies, materials, office equipment up to 50 lbs, and assist students.
  • Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods and move frequently within the building.
  • Organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use, office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Positive attitude and professional image.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; clear and respectful communication.
  • Awareness of diverse student needs, including physical and social-emotional.
  • May require a valid driver’s license.
  • Completion of district-approved CPI training.
  • Training to support medically-fragile students per IEPs and Health Care Plans.
  • Previous experience working with youth and young adults.
  • Ability to adapt to various subject areas.
  • Physical mobility including sitting, walking, standing, bending, and assisting with wheelchairs and ramps.
Position Expectations:
  1. Assist medically qualified staff with healthcare tasks as outlined in IEP and Health Care Plan, including gastrostomy feeding, suctioning, Vagus Nerve Stimulation, etc.
  2. Support students under the guidance of licensed staff by tutoring, monitoring assessments, implementing classroom procedures, reinforcing positive behavior, and using technology for instruction and remediation.
  3. Assist Education Association staff with organizing off-campus programs, clerical tasks, lab setup, explaining instructional materials, and communicating student progress and health data.
  4. Participate in professional development and foster inclusive, equitable relationships with staff, students, and community members.
