Role Overview

Program Aides On-Call are generalists responsible for providing educational, relational and social experiences for infants, toddlers and/or preschool-aged children to foster growth and development across all developmental domains. The position reports to the Education and Inclusion Manager or Center Director and may involve travel to program sites and home visits.

Essential Duties
  • Apply clear practice and procedure in day-to-day execution of work.
  • Organize self and manage time to get tasks completed.
  • Keep manager informed of important issues.
  • Build effective relationships within the work group and with children/families.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Classroom Assistance
  • Assist classroom staff in all classroom activities.
  • Support the Teacher in any aspect of the program as needed (e.g., Family Nights, copying newsletters, cutting classroom materials, making phone calls).
  • Serve as a temporary substitute during the periodic absence of the Assistant Teacher or Teacher.
Janitorial Assistance
  • Provide custodial support (picking up trash, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, minor maintenance).
  • Serve as custodian in the absence of the regular custodian when required.
  • Complete routine kitchen/dining room chores (dishwashing, portioning foods, logging temperatures).
  • Prepare and serve food, including special needs requirements.
  • Participate in food service clean-up, inventory, and other tasks as requested.
  • Substitute for regular Cook or Assistant Cook as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal hygiene and sanitation standards.
Other General Job Duties
  • Serve as a Bus Monitor, if required.
  • Attend workshops, meetings, staff and parent meetings, and community activities.
  • Understand Head Start Program Performance Standards and local licensing regulations.
  • Maintain knowledge of occupational disease and injury prevention regulations.
  • Promote Head Start positively in the community.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
  • Adhere to the Save the Children Head Start Employee Handbook and related policies.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certification as required by federal, state, or local Head Start/childcare regulations.
  • Obtain and maintain basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to relate sensitively with children and communicate effectively with staff, parents, and families.
  • Proven ability to follow directions and take initiative.
  • Confidentiality around family information.
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities.
Additional Qualifications
  • Must perform medium to heavy physical work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 5‑10 pounds continuously; must also perform routine mandatory actions such as standing, walking, and using a keyboard.

Compensation

The base pay for this position starts at $15/hour, subject to variation based on experience, credentials, internal peer comparison, and other qualifications.
