Position Title: Program Aide on call/Substitutes

Employee Type: Part‑Time/Full‑Time Regular

Supervisor Title: Manager, Education & Inclusion or Center Director

Division: Head Start, U.S. Programs

The Role

Program Aides On‑Call are generalists responsible for providing educational, relational, and social experiences for infants, toddlers, and/or preschool‑aged children to foster growth and development in all developmental domains.

This position reports to the Education and Inclusion Manager or Center Director and may be expected to travel to various program sites and/or home visits.

Program Aides may be assigned to classrooms, centers, bus routes, cafeterias, or kitchens as needed. They assist with classroom management and support program operations.

As a frontline representative of Save the Children, Program Aides ensure the safety and security of children and families they encounter and adhere to the agency’s values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
  • Apply clear practices and procedures in day‑to‑day execution of the job.
  • Organize self and manage time to get tasks completed.
  • Keep manager informed of important issues.
  • Build effective relationships within the workgroup and with children and families.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Classroom Assistance
  • Assist classroom staff in all activities.
  • Assist the teacher with any aspect of the program as needs arise (e.g., Family Nights, newsletter copies, cutting materials, phone calls).
  • Serve as a temporary substitute during absences of the Assistant Teacher or Teacher.
Janitorial Assistance
  • Provide custodial support as needed, including picking up trash, sweeping, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, securing buildings, cleaning windows, and performing minor maintenance.
  • Act as custodian in the absence of the regular custodian on a periodic basis.
Kitchen Assistance
  • Complete routine kitchen and dining tasks such as dishwashing, portioning foods, and logging food temperatures.
  • Prepare and serve food for service periods, including special needs or disability accommodations.
  • Participate in food service clean‑up, inventory, and other tasks as requested.
  • Substitute for the regular cook or assistant cook as needed.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal sanitation standards.
Other General Job Duties
  • Serve as a bus monitor when required.
  • Attend workshops, staff meetings, parent meetings, and community activities.
  • Understand Head Start Program Performance Standards and local childcare licensing regulations.
  • Apply universal precautions and prevent occupational injury and contamination.
  • Promote Head Start positively in the community.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
  • Familiarize yourself with Save the Children policies, the Employee Handbook, and human resources procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Minimum high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certifications required by federal, state or local Head Start regulations.
  • Within 90 days obtain and maintain basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of working with infants, toddlers, and preschool‑aged children.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to relate sensitively with children and communicate effectively with staff, parents, and families.
  • Follow directions and take initiative.
  • Keep family information confidential.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities.
Additional Qualifications
  • Physical ability to perform medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
  • Pass comprehensive background check and health requirements.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Preference for current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents.
Compensation

The base pay for this position starts at $15 per hour. Actual base salary may vary based on experience, credentials, and other relevant qualifications.
