Job description

Position Title: Program Aide On-Call

Employee Type: Part-Time

Supervisor Title: Manager, Education & Inclusion or Center Director

Division: U.S. Programs & Advocacy

Summary

Program Aides On-Call are generalists responsible for providing educational, relational, and social experiences for infants, toddlers, and/or preschool-aged children to foster growth and development across all developmental domains. They report to the Education and Inclusion Manager or Center Director and may travel to various program sites and/or conduct home visits.

They may be assigned to various classrooms, centers, bus routes, cafeterias, or kitchens as needed for program operations, assisting with daily classroom management and other duties.

As frontline representatives of Save the Children, Program Aides must ensure the safety and security of children and families, adhering to the organization's values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.

Given the routine contact with children, the position emphasizes preventing child abuse through awareness, good practices, and training, and requires reporting and responding to any instances of child abuse, as well as promoting child-safeguarding training and awareness.

Essential Duties
  1. Apply clear practices and procedures daily.
  2. Organize and manage time effectively.
  3. Keep the manager informed of important issues.
  4. Build effective relationships within the workgroup and with children and families.
  5. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Classroom Assistance
  1. Assist classroom staff in all activities.
  2. Support the Teacher in various program aspects as needed (e.g., Family Nights, copying newsletters, preparing materials, making calls).
  3. Serve as a temporary substitute during absences.
Janitorial Assistance
  1. Provide custodial support, including trash pickup, cleaning, and minor repairs.
  2. Serve as custodian when needed.
Kitchen Assistance
  1. Perform routine kitchen and food service tasks.
  2. Prepare and serve food, including for children with special needs.
  3. Assist with cleaning, inventory, and substitute for kitchen staff as needed.
  4. Comply with hygiene and sanitation standards.
Other Duties
  1. May serve as a Bus Monitor.
  2. Attend workshops, meetings, and activities.
  3. Understand Head Start Program Standards and regulations.
  4. Promote Head Start positively in the community.
  5. Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and staff information.
  6. Adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certification as required by Head Start or child care regulations.
  • Obtain and maintain first aid and pediatric CPR certification within 90 days.
  • Knowledge of working with young children.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Ability to relate sensitively with children and communicate effectively with staff and families.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, with activities including sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Includes repetitive motions and computer use.

Must pass background checks and health requirements. May need to operate a vehicle with a valid driver’s license. Preference given to current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents.
