Position Title: Program Aide on call/Substitutes

The Role
Program Aides On‑Call are generalists responsible for providing educational, relational and social experiences for infants, toddlers and preschool‑aged children to foster growth and development in all developmental domains. This position reports to the Education and Inclusion Manager or Center Director and may involve travel to program sites and/or home visits.
Essential Duties
- Apply clear practice and procedures in day‑to‑day execution of job tasks.
- Organize and manage time to accomplish responsibilities.
- Keep manager informed of important issues.
- Build effective relationships within workgroup and with children/families.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Classroom Assistance
- Assist classroom staff in all classroom activities.
- Support the Teacher in various aspects of the program as needed (e.g., Family Nights, copying newsletters, cutting out materials, making phone calls).
- Serve as a temporary substitute during the periodic absence of the Assistant Teacher or Teacher.
Janitorial Assistance
- Provide custodial support as needed, including picking up trash, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, securing buildings, windows, and minor maintenance and repairs.
- May serve as custodian in the absence of the regular custodian on a periodic basis.
Kitchen Assistance
- Complete routine kitchen/dining room chores (dishwashing, portioning foods, logging temperatures, etc.).
- Prepare food and serve items for service before or after use, including preparation for children with special needs.
- Participate in food service clean up, inventory, and other requested tasks.
- Substitute for regular Cook or Assistant Cook as needed.
- Assist Cook or Assistant Cook in any capacity.
- Comply with all local, state and federal hygiene and sanitation standards.
Other General Job Duties
- May serve as a Bus Monitor.
- Attend all workshops and meetings as required.
- Attend staff and parent meetings and activities.
- Gain understanding of Head Start Program Performance Standards and local childcare licensing regulations.
- Maintain knowledge of occupational disease and injury prevention, universal precautions and contamination prevention.
- Promote Head Start positively in the community.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Head Start/Early Head Start children, families and staff.
- Familiarize thoroughly with Save the Children Head Start Employee Handbook, Human Resources Policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Minimum high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Certification as required by federal, state or local Head Start or childcare regulations, now or as amended in the future.
- Obtain and maintain basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification within 90 days of employment (or sooner if required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of basics of working with infants, toddlers, and preschool‑aged children.
- Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Demonstrated ability to relate sensitively with children and communicate effectively with staff, parents and families.
- Proven ability to follow directions and take initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to keep all family information strictly confidential.
- Demonstrated ability to work with children with disabilities.
Additional Qualifications
- Physical requirements: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work up to 50 pounds of force occasionally (and 20 to 5–10 pounds frequently), including sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Some duties require repetitive action and motion, keyboarding and computer use.
- Clear pre‑employment background check and certifications (criminal records, sex offender registry, employment and education verifications, child abuse registry if required).
- Must operate a motor vehicle; maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with Save the Children policies on safe operation of motor vehicles.
- Preferred: Current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents.
Compensation
The base pay starts at $15/hour. Actual base salary may vary based on experience, credentials, internal peer base salary and other relevant qualifications.
