Professor of Oceanography – University of Rhode Island

The Graduate School of Oceanography seeks a scientist for the position of tenured Professor of Oceanography. A primary focus of the successful candidate will be ocean exploration that integrates ship-based field programs, innovative technology development (with emphasis on autonomous systems), and broad-based educational outreach activities.

The individual will assume a leadership role as co-P.I. in the recently-funded, 5 year NOAA Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) led by the Graduate School of Oceanography (URI) and its institutional partners, University of New Hampshire, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Preference will be given to applicants with a distinguished record of planning and executing oceanographic research cruises that utilize remotely operated and autonomous vehicles (ROV/AUVs). This hire will develop broad linkages within GSO, as well as with URI’s College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS) and the College of Engineering, and will play a significant role with GSO’s Center for Ocean Exploration.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop an externally funded research program and is encouraged to assist in leading exploration and research cruises onboard the E/V Nautilus and other oceanographic vessels, including the R/V Resolution. Teaching will include new or existing Grand Challenge or general education undergraduate classes, as well as relevant graduate classes.

Basic Function:

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of oceanographic research cruise leadership, planning and execution as shown by cruise reports and planning documents.
  • Demonstrated use of state-of-the-art oceanographic exploration technologies such as remotely operated vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, autonomous surface vehicles, high-resolution mapping systems, and/or innovative sensor systems for water column measurements as shown by cruise reports, planning documents or publications.
  • Research and teaching strengths that complement existing programs and foci at GSO and in affiliated departments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
