TheDepartment of Earth, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences(EESS) at Furman University invites applications for a tenure-trackposition at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor ofEnvironmental Science, expected to begin August 1, 2027. We seekcandidates whose work engages with climate change, and who bringexpertise in areas such as biogeochemical flows, critical zonescience, climate science, or closely related fields. Successfulcandidates will demonstrate either an established track record ofmentoring undergraduate researchers or a strong potential to doso.

Job Duties

We invitecandidates with expertise in climate change who can teach generalclimate science to students across our interdisciplinary majors andpathways (Earth Science, Environmental Science, SustainabilityScience) as well as advanced courses related to their expertise.Areas of specialization may include biogeochemical flows, criticalzone science, climate science, or other related fields.Thesuccessful candidate will join an interdisciplinary departmentdedicated to student mentorship and undergraduate research. Theteaching load is four courses per year (two per semester), eachwith lab sections. The candidate will be expected to developcourses in their area of expertise, teach 100-level introductoryscience courses, and they may contribute to other programs,including First Year Writing Seminars, Furman's Pathways advisingprogram, and May Experience study away courses. In addition, thesuccessful candidate will be expected to maintain an activeresearch agenda that creates meaningful opportunities forundergraduate student involvement and supports our senior thesisprogram. All faculty also advise majors within the department andparticipate in department and university service. The EESS department is housed inside the Charles H. Townes ScienceCenter and features state-of-the-art laboratories for watershedscience, biogeochemistry, geospatial sciences, geology, andhydrogeology. We welcome applicants interested in collaboratingwithin our interdisciplinary department, which includes physicaland life scientists as well as qualitative and quantitative socialscientists. We also encourage collaboration across the university,including with Environmental Conservation Biology and the ShiInstitute for Sustainable Communities.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. inenvironmental science, climate science, or a related field isrequired by August 1, 2027. Qualified candidates must demonstrate astrong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as potentialfor excellence in research and mentorship.
