Job summary

Job description

Professional Tutor (Part‑Time)

Provide individual and small group tutorial support to HFC students. Interact primarily with students, faculty, and staff. Offer tutoring in person or online. Expected to be content‑matter experts and help students improve learning strategies.

Part‑time, up to 24 hours per week, renewable each semester. Compensation is based on degree level.

  • Digital and Graphic Arts: Must have knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, AfterEffects, Animate, and Acrobat.

Education and Credentials
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant program, curriculum, or subject area. Equivalent coursework in a closely related field may also be considered.
  • For English Language Institute positions: Bachelor’s degree and certification in TESOL, TEFL, TESL, or equivalent; Master’s degree in TESOL or equivalent preferred.
  • For Career and Technical Education Programs: Possession of a relevant associate degree may be considered.
  • Advanced or terminal degree in program, curriculum, or subject area is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain high proficiency at developmental level.
  • Support students via tutoring across most or all courses offered at Henry Ford College.
  • Tutor students individually and in groups to facilitate concept understanding and skill acquisition.
  • Assist students in areas of weakness while providing appropriate academic guidance.
  • Quickly learn and demonstrate applicable software packages and other topics covered in supported courses.
  • Collaborate with the Learning Lab Coordinator and other departments to provide subject‑specific workshops, group tutoring, and study sessions.
  • Deliver knowledge effectively in a computer lab classroom setting.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of technology when applicable.
  • Practice active listening by giving full attention to others, asking appropriate questions, and avoiding inappropriate interruptions.
  • Use good judgment and work effectively under pressure.
  • Maintain accurate records and information.
  • Assist the Learning Lab Coordinator in training student tutors.
  • Identify and develop content‑specific resources to support student learning.
  • Participate in training and professional development activities as directed.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject area, patience, and a willingness to help others.
