Job summary

Miami University is seeking a part-time Professional Tutor to provide one-on-one or group tutoring to students, either in-person on campus or online.

The role involves creating tutoring plans, helping develop study skills, documenting progress, and coordinating with professors and academic coaches. Remote work is possible for approved positions, and a criminal background check is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts earned by date of employment; significant tutoring and/or teaching experience.
  • Experience with a wide variety of students with academic risk factors; ability to explain concepts to others; Miami University classroom experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring to students with coursework in an office environment or online
  • Work with tutee to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student’s individual needs
  • Offer assistance with developing study strategies
  • Make file notes and communicate with professor, academic coaches and/or director about student progress per department policies
  • Operate computer and other resources to provide tutoring on-site or remotely
  • Be accessible to students who have come for assistance
  • Complete paperwork in a timely manner
  • Assistant with the facilitation in the distance learning classroom
  • Support students in the development of vital college success skills such as executive functioning and study skills
  • Serve as a case-manager/academic coach for high-support students
  • Facilitating the virtual component of IVDL courses or distance-learning courses in a physical classroom

Job description

Professional Tutor (part-time, temporary position) provides one-on-one or group tutoring to students; may also assist by modeling study skills and by mentoring new and returning undergraduate students. Professional Tutors/mentors are scheduled as needed/available.

  • Provide tutoring to students with coursework in an office environment or online
  • Work with tutee to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student’s individual needs
  • Offer assistance with developing study strategies
  • Make file notes and communicate with professor, academic coaches and/or director about student progress per department policies

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts earned by date of employment; significant tutoring and/or teaching experience (education and experience may be gained concurrently).
  • Consideration may be given to candidates with experience working with a wide variety of students with academic risk factors; explain concepts to others effectively; work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds; possess good organizational skills; exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment; and Miami University classroom experience.
