Saginaw Valley State University is seeking a Professional Tutor for the Math and Physics Learning Center. This part-time role involves tutoring students in Math, Physics, and Statistics, both in-person and online, and supervising student tutors when coordinators are not on duty.

Applicants should hold a math or physics degree with strong calculus, algebra, and physics fundamentals, and be able to learn statistics and software quickly. Some remote duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

Job Title: Professional Tutor Full or Part Time: Part time Hours: 23 Exempt: No Supervisory Org: Math and Physics Learning Center (PM)

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: To tutor students in Math, Physics, and Statistics in the Math and Physics Learning Center and to act as supervisor of student tutors when coordinators are not on duty, and perform administrative duties as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Tutor students, through both walk-in and individual tutoring sessions, in-person and online, in all Math and Physics classes supported by the Center (Math 072 – Math 262 and Physics 107 – Physics 212). This includes help with software packages such as R. Supervise student tutors when coordinators of the Math and Physics Learning Center are not on duty. Assist coordinators in creating materials for webpages or workshops. Assist students with questions regarding Center services. Administer Math 081 computation skills tests as needed. Assisting with tracking, appointment, and other software. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision is received from the Director of the Math and Physics Learning Center.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of student tutors when neither of the coordinators are on duty.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and substantial coursework in physics or bachelor’s degree in physics and substantial coursework in mathematics. Must be highly competent in algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations, mechanics, and electricity/magnetism and willing and able to quickly learn statistics, geometry, mathematical software packages and other topics covered in our supported courses. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students. Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor/second major in physics or bachelor’s degree in physics and a minor/second major in mathematics. Comfortable with statistics, geometry, or mathematical software packages.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties are generally performed indoors and on campus and not exposed to adverse conditions. Some weeknights and weekends may be required. Occasionally, remote duties may be assigned. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and throughout their employment.
