Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

HDFS , one of nine departments within the School of Health and Human Sciences, is a highly collaborative, research-oriented department that values interdisciplinary study. The department has 22 full-time faculty, over 350 undergraduate majors, and approximately 100 graduate students in MEd, MS, and Ph.D. programs. At the undergraduate level, students prepare to work with young children by enrolling in the Early Childhood Development and Education major and choosing either the BK licensure program or the Early Care and Education program. At the graduate level, the Department has a master’s degree program in Birth through Kindergarten Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development and two certificate programs in early childhood. Each of these graduate and undergraduate programs is offered jointly with the Department of Specialized Education Services in the School of Education. HDFS faculty are also engaged in community-based projects to support quality early education services, including the NC Rated License Assessment Project, which assesses the quality of childcare programs across the state of North Carolina, and the EQuIPD project which provides professional development and coaching for early childhood teachers.

The Professional Track Faculty in this position serves as the Director for UNCG’s Child Care Education Program (http://ccep.wp.uncg.edu/ ), a program that is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children ( NAEYC ), and operates in North Carolina’s highest 5-Star Rated License level. The childcare program is a part of the School of Health and Human Services and provides opportunities for interdisciplinary research and preparation of early childhood education teachers. The program enrolls over 50 children ages 3 months to 5 years from the Greensboro community and uses an observation-based curriculum. Lead teachers with bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education staff each classroom.

Position Summary

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies ( HDFS ) seeks to fill a

twelve-month Professional Track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor

of Early Childhood Education who serves as the Director for a high-quality on-site university childcare education program serving populations that reflect communities in the Greensboro/Guilford County region. We are seeking a colleague to lead a group of committed educators in providing high-quality services to children and families, while also shaping the professional learning of future early educators. The Professional Track faculty member will lead the childcare program that serves as a field placement site for UNCG students/pre-service teachers and will mentor experienced educators in preparing them to teach children ages birth through kindergarten. The successful candidate will join energetic and vibrant faculty and staff and should have a priority on serving children with and without special needs.

Working with a committed team of Center coordinators, experienced educators in the childcare program, and department faculty, the responsibilities of this position include:

  • On-site administration of the UNCG Child Care Education program, including leadership for the program’s curriculum, policies, and procedures; oversight and support for a staff of 14 degreed teachers, plus student teachers, teaching interns, and part-time workers; promoting meaningful family engagement in classrooms and in the program; maintaining consistent two-way communication with and among Center stakeholders; management of child/family enrollment to assure maintenance of appropriate teacher: child ratios and group sizes; development and monitoring of the program’s annual budget; ensuring all accreditation and licensing standards are met; coordinating community outreach efforts; serving as a liaison and advocate for the Center with Department, School, and University administrators; representing the Center, Department and University in the Greensboro community.
  • Partnering with highly collaborative faculty in Human Development & Family Studies as well as Specialized Education Services to teach a limited number of courses in the Early Childhood Development and Education teacher preparation program. The ECDE program is multi-disciplinary and intentionally structured to prepare university students to work effectively with families and children with and without special needs; and
  • Supporting the department through institutional and professional service.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Science or Education degree (requirements completed by July 1, 2025) in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Child Development, Human Development and Family Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field. Experience coordinating/administering professional or educational activities in the early childhood field.
  • Experience working with young children, families, and/or adult learners. Meets or qualifies to meet North Carolina Early Childhood Administration Credential Level III .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience administering a childcare program and/or other early childhood education program, including an on-campus program, a NAEYC accredited childcare program, and/or a program that supports in-service early educators.
  • Experience managing the budget of a program with multiple funding sources including federal funding.
  • Experience working with children with special needs and their families.
  • Evidence of competence in teaching and/or mentoring pre-service and/or in-service early educators; teaching and/or administrative experience within an Institution of Higher Education.
