Job Description: Professional Staff Nurse

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a key member of the care delivery team. This role involves setting standards for care quality and being responsible, accountable, and authorized to provide nursing care. The nurse manages patient care activities for a group of patients and their families, utilizing independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with team members. The role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. The nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes across the continuum of care. A commitment to the community and the nursing profession is essential.

Responsibilities:
  1. Patient and Staff Education: Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles (and pediatric if applicable) and applies them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides detailed education to guide patients and families through their care episodes and transitions. Supports the development of students and new staff, potentially serving as a preceptor. Fosters an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous improvement.
  2. Professional Development and Team Participation: Holds accountability for ongoing professional growth to enhance practice and patient care quality. Participates actively in unit-based governance, goal setting, and supports change initiatives to improve care and work environment. Engages fully with the care team, responds to team needs, and contributes to quality improvement efforts. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change.
  3. Relationship Building and Safety: Develops productive internal and external relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment. Understands cultural differences and promotes healthy relationships. Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours and time management, and reports safety hazards.
  4. Application of Nursing Process: Uses the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment. Sets daily goals and care plans involving patients as partners, considering holistic needs. Demonstrates critical thinking to identify issues and communicates effectively with care team members. Documents comprehensively to facilitate communication and incorporates organizational goals to enhance safety, quality, and satisfaction. Builds caring, compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  5. Quality Improvement: Participates in unit-specific quality initiatives, identifies opportunities for improvement, and takes responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction. Utilizes research and evidence-based practices to support clinical improvements, discusses research opportunities, and influences care plans accordingly.
