Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania seeks a Professional Development Advisor to strengthen statewide professional development for library staff and volunteers. You will lead statewide programs, collaborate with agencies, manage grant projects, and apply technology to broaden learning opportunities across the Commonwealth.

You will provide guidance to librarians and staff, coordinate with partners, and ensure training aligns with state priorities while supporting community access to library services.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience as a Librarian 2 or Rare Books Librarian (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Four years of professional library experience; or
  • Three years of professional library experience, and a master’s degree in library science, library services, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes two years of professional library experience.

Job description

The Professional Development Advisor position with the Bureau of Library Development offers a chance to inspire growth across libraries in the Commonwealth. This role helps strengthen learning and teamwork for staff and volunteers who support community access to library services. This role provides statewide guidance to improve professional development for library staff and volunteers, and strengthens programs that support learning across the Commonwealth. As a Professional Development Advisor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Program Leadership: Develop statewide professional development programs and guide key projects that support library staff education
  • Partnership Building: Collaborate with agencies and associations to advance training initiatives that align with Commonwealth priorities
  • Grant Management: Manage assigned grant projects by reviewing applications, supporting planning, and overseeing program budgets
  • Technology Use: Apply technology in strategic ways to expand learning opportunities for the library field
  • Field Support: Maintain reliable communication with library personnel to understand training needs and offer guidance

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. You will be required to report in-office on Monday and Tuesday each week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
  • One year of experience as a Librarian 2 or Rare Books Librarian (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
