Professional Liability Attorney
This is a rare opportunity to take the lead on high-stakes legal and medical malpractice defense at a firm that handles some of the most complex professional liability matters in California - with a competitive salary of $150,000-$220,000 and a hybrid schedule that respects your time.
What you'll do:
- Own a sophisticated docket of legal malpractice, medical malpractice, and related commercial litigation matters from intake through trial or resolution
- Drive case strategy: draft and argue dispositive motions, manage discovery, and prepare compelling briefs under deadline pressure
- Lead all litigation phases - investigations, evidentiary hearings, settlement negotiations, mediations, and trial
- Select, prepare, and depose expert witnesses and medical or technical consultants; evaluate and respond to opposing expert reports
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and insurance carriers, delivering clear risk assessments and settlement recommendations
- Supervise, delegate to, and mentor associate attorneys, paralegals, and support staff; review work product for accuracy and quality
- Support business development through client relationships, networking, and proposal drafting within the professional liability practice
What you need:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active California State Bar membership in good standing
- 5+ years of litigation experience with a meaningful focus on professional liability (legal malpractice or medical malpractice defense)
- Demonstrated motion practice and trial experience, or substantial trial preparation in complex matters
- Hands-on experience managing expert witnesses - selection, preparation, direct, and cross-examination
- Strong client counseling skills with the ability to communicate risk and strategy clearly to sophisticated clients and insurers
Nice to have:
- Experience working with claims teams and insurance carriers on coverage, indemnity, and defense cost matters
- Track record mentoring junior attorneys and managing high-volume complex dockets simultaneously
- Prior involvement in business development, client pitches, or practice group growth initiatives
- Familiarity with medical records review and healthcare regulatory context for medical malpractice matters
Location & schedule:
Los Angeles, CA - Hybrid
This role is based in the firm's Los Angeles office Occasional travel required for court appearances, client sites, mediations, and hearings throughout California.
