Professional Engineer – Energy Incentives

Position Title: Professional Engineer – Energy Incentives

Location: US Remote - Central Time Zone preferred but not required

Overview: TaxTaker is seeking a professional engineer to join our rapidly growing energy incentives team. We are looking for a licensed engineer to help lead our energy efficiency and renewable energy studies while also consulting with clients on various incentives. In this leadership role, you will build out our technical standard of practice, oversee our energy modeling services, conduct site visits to energy efficient buildings across the country, and manage client relationships and projects. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with the federal tax incentives (such as 179D, 45L, Cost Segregation, or ITC), have passed the PE exam or be a licensed engineer in one or more states, have experience with project management and working with clients, and have a passion for sustainability and energy efficiency in the built environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Energy Analysis & Modeling:

  • Perform detailed energy analyses of commercial buildings using IRS approved energy modeling software (e.g., eQuest, EnergyPlus, or DesignBuilder).
  • Evaluate HVAC, lighting, and building envelope systems to determine energy performance and savings against baseline energy codes.
  • Build and maintain a living technical standard of practice that complies with IRS, ASHRAE, and case law requirements.
  • Create templates and tools to assist with the technical analysis for various energy incentives.

Tax Consulting:

  • Prepare required forms, energy certifications, and comprehensive final reports to meet IRS requirements.
  • Conduct calls with building/asset owners and design teams on their energy efficient/renewable energy projects to provide guidance on the eligible incentives.
  • Gather project details to prepare initial estimates and ROI calculations for the energy incentives.

Project Management & Team Oversight:

  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines, energy efficiency goals, and program requirements are met.
  • Provide guidance and general oversight to energy modelers and other technical team members, ensuring the quality and accuracy of our services.

Research & Development:

  • Research future, current, and historical energy codes and emerging renewable energy technologies for their applicability to energy incentives.
  • Collaborate with the software development team to enhance modeling tools and methodologies.
  • Investigate complimentary services such as local/utility rebates, LEED certification, or ENERGYSTAR certification to determine potential growth opportunities for the energy incentives division.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in energy efficiency federal tax incentives such as 179D, 45L, Cost Segregation, or ITC.

Skills:

  • Proficiency with DOE-approved energy modeling software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus, HAP, or DesignBuilder).
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate energy performance and compliance.
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office Suite and project management/CRM software such as Pipedrive.

Certifications:

  • Passed the PE exam and in process of obtaining or has already obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one state. Ability and willingness to obtain licenses in several states.

Travel:

  • Willingness to travel up to 30% for client site visits and inspections.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in mechanical, environmental, or electrical engineering.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in energy efficiency federal tax incentives such as 179D, 45L, Cost Segregation, or ITC.
  • 2+ years of experience with ENERGYSTAR certification.
  • 5+ years of experience in the commercial building design/construction industry.

Certifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE License) in multiple states including California and Georgia.
  • LEED AP
  • HERS Rater
