Job summary

Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) in Topeka, KS is seeking a Professional Civil Engineer II to oversee traffic data collection and analysis in support of FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide implementation. This role is based in the Eisenhower State Office Building within the Office of Transportation and Planning.

The engineer will coordinate data collection programs, troubleshoot data issues, and collaborate with urban areas, counties and MPOs for reporting.

Qualifications

• Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
• Six years of engineering experience.
• Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and supervises the traffic data collection to meet the requirements of the FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide (TMG) as implemented by the Kansas TMS/H.
• Responsible for the traffic count data. Continually troubleshoots data and develops solutions to address issues as they may occur.
• Responsible for federal Functional Classification review and update coordination with Urban Areas, Counties, Metropolitan Planning Organizations and the Federal Highway Administration for Mileage and Travel reporting purposes.
• Provides computer technical assistance to the Traffic and Field Operations Unit. Performs software maintenance and development for any Unit tasks. Provides user support for software packages provided by equipment vendors.
• Reviews the testing and evaluation of traffic data collection equipment used by the Traffic and Field Operations Unit. The equipment is used for gathering information for truck weight studies, traffic counting, vehicle classification and speed studies
• Provides technical assistance to the Bureau of Transportation Planning projects such as preparation of the State Planning and Research Program.

Compensation:

• Annual Salary Range: $99,640.80- $106,938.33
• Hourly Pay Range: $47.90 - $51.41

This Professional Civil Engineer II position is located in Topeka, at the Eisenhower State Office Building, and is within the Office of Transportation and Planning. This Engineer will be responsible for the traffic data collection to meet the requirements FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide (TMG) as implemented by the Kansas Traffic Monitoring System for Highways.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Plans, coordinates and supervises the traffic data collection to meet the requirements of the FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide (TMG) as implemented by the Kansas TMS/H. This program collects continuous and short-term traffic counts throughout the State.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Traffic Count Program Management Experience; Database Experience; Spreadsheet Experience; SQL Programming Experience; GIS experience in an LRS environment
• Five years of experience supervising a team of multiple engineers and technicians
