Job summary

Airgas is seeking a Production Zone Engineer in Houston, TX. You will support multiple plants in the zone, troubleshoot operations, and lead projects to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical preferred) and 3 years of engineering or operations experience. A comprehensive benefits package accompanies the position, with day-to-day responsibilities in production support.

Join our dynamic team at Airgas as a Zone Production Engineer where they provide technical support and operational guidance to multiple plant locations within a designated geographical zone. The Zone Production Engineer will be a key player in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our production facilities. This individual will be responsible for troubleshooting operational issues, optimizing processes, managing small projects, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across the zone.
Safety & Compliance
  • Supports and complies with all safety, health, and environmental procedures directed by local and corporate personnel and safety departments.
  • Supports and complies with all process safety management and risk management plan practices.
  • Supports operation permit reporting and monitoring requirements, in compliance with federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Supports all personnel policies directed by local and corporate personnel.
Project Management & Engineering Design
  • Define, design, specify, control costs and implement projects generated by a technical problem or unique plant requirement to improve safety, reliability, or efficiency.
  • Designs plant processes consisting of instruments, controls, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems, utilizing and applying knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects within the area of assigned responsibility.
  • Develops economic cost justification for capital improvements.
Process Optimization & Efficiency
  • Recommends changes in process to effect the greatest economy in production methods and material cost.
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate malfunctions and improve efficiency.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units under operational conditions and analyzes test results in relation to design specifications, modifies or adjusts equipment to meet specifications.
  • Plans utilization of production facilities to improve efficiency of operations.
Technical & Operational Support
  • Provides technical support for plant production and maintenance as required.
  • Provides on-call assistance to plant personnel.
  • Supports plant DCS (Distributed Control System) system.
Administrative & Professional Development
  • Makes a report of plant engineering activities to the Plant Manager.
  • Studies engineering and technical publications to keep abreast of technological changes and development in industry.
  • May perform special tasks as requested by Plant Manager and Corporate officials.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical preferred)
Required Length & Type of Experience:
  • 3 years of operational or engineering experience required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Solution-oriented, with excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to gain technical knowledge in operation and maintenance of Air Separation, CO, VSA and Onsite N2/O2 Plants.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with all levels of personnel
  • Ability to perform under stress and time constraints
  • Comfortable in both Corporate and Field environments
  • Problem solving ability necessary to define, design, specify, control costs and implement projects generated by a technical problem or unique customer or field production requirement.
  • Demonstrates personal integrity and transparency.
  • Demonstrates ability to make sound judgement, timely decisions, manage multiple tasks and prioritize/delegate work effectively.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with project stakeholders; fluent in English - both written and spoken.
  • Ability to write routine business reports and business correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees and/or customers.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals using the English language.
