Primary Function:
The primary function of the Area Supervisor is the timely production of a quality product, and the safety of the employees involved. This person is responsible for execution of cost control, scheduling and manning to maximize efficiency and assist in maintaining a union-free environment in a participative management style. The incumbent will champion continuous improvement objectives and help drive COS and the lean manufacturing process. The Area Supervisor serves as a key interface with a variety of personnel, including but not limited to: Plant employees, temporary associates, Engineering, R & D, IT, Technical Services, HRD, Sales, Materials and Logistics, as well as Carlisle management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct Supervision – Provide leadership for personnel on the shift in a manner that fosters their continued growth and development. Address personnel matters in a timely manner. Ensure annual performance reviews are completed for all personnel.
Safety & Health – monitor the equipment, working conditions and methods utilized by shift personnel to ensure that plant safety standards are adhered to.
Quality – Evaluate the production of materials in the department to ensure that the methods and end results maintain the quality specifications established. Identify and correct non-conformance situations through troubleshooting and utilization of support personnel.
Quantity of Production/Material Scheduling – Utilizing a weekly schedule, ensure that production is accomplished in the most efficient manner possible. Ensure that priority products, scheduled for shipment, are completed on time. Evaluate equipment and manpower needs to accomplish productivity requirements. Provide direction to support personnel (i.e. Quality, Maintenance, etc.) to resolve problems that may interfere with obtainment of production goals.
Cost Control/Project Development – Assist Operations Manager in establishing and controlling budgets for the production areas. Initiate and assist in developing and implementing projects to ensure objectives of the plant are met. Serve as an active participant in COS-related activities and help drive the continuous improvement process throughout the plant.
Participative Activities and Personal Development – become involved in plant-wide participative efforts (i.e. social and recreational committees, special event teams, etc.) to foster a cooperative family atmosphere. Engage in learning opportunities that will lead to personal and professional development.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Essential Full Performance Knowledge: Knowledge of product processing techniques, quality specifications and plant policies and procedures. Understanding of union-free and participative management techniques. Knowledge of supervisory/leadership approaches and general business knowledge. Working knowledge of the performance appraisal process, timekeeping system and requirements, job evaluation system and inventory management system.
Essential Full Performance Skills: Personal computer skills, as well as a working ability to utilize standard programs such as Word, Excel, and Power Point. Oral and written communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of groups and make effective presentations. Good organizational skills, along with effective time management. Basic math skills. Ability to effectively delegate to subordinates and others in supporting roles. Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to handle stress and make decisions under a variety of challenging circumstances. Comfortable in addressing performance issues and in conflict management. Ability to operate production-related equipment and learn new equipment/processes.
Essential Full Performance Abilities: Able to demonstrate competency in the above-mentioned skills, as well as interpersonal skills, leading to the development of a safe and productive workforce.
Equipment/Data:
Equipment Operated: Computer/printer, copier, scanner, fax, calculator, security system, telephone system, automobiles, fork truck, audio-visual devices and all production equipment.
Data Used: Expense budgets, SAP information, safety and regulatory reports, attendance reports, ACE forms and justifications, timekeeping records, personnel reports, quality reports and processing specifications.
Materials Used: Exposure to materials used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber, TPO and PVC-based products, including polymers, carbon black, fillers, chemicals, oils, fabrics, plastics, resins, cardboard, wood, etc.
Interactions with Others: This position will interact with a variety of professional and hourly personnel on a daily basis, including Managers, other supervisors, Production Team Leaders, Maintenance personnel, Engineers, Quality and Technical Services personnel, the Central Engineering group, vendors, contracted workers and office support personnel.
Education & Experience Requirements:
B.S. Degree in a business-related or technical field with 3+ years recent experience in a leadership position preferably in a manufacturing environment OR a high school diploma/GED with 5+ years of manufacturing experience with at least 3 years in a recent leadership position.
Microsoft Office knowledge is required. ShopFloor and SAP experience is preferred. The ability to communicate and interact with other functional groups within the Company is essential.Internal candidates: 2+ years of leadership experience with Carlisle or equivalent of external candidate requirements.
Work Environment: Activities occur inside an industrial facility that manufactures EPDM, TPO and PVC roofing materials, as well as adhesive products. 30% of the time is spent in an office environment, which is relatively clean and climate controlled. 70% of the time may be spent in production areas where there can be exposure to:
Heat or cold
Dust
Chemicals
Heavy equipment operation, including forklifts
Pinch points and moving mechanical parts
Time Worked: Rotating days/afternoons (2 weeks of 6:30AM-3:00PM; 2 weeks of 2:30PM-11:00PM)with overtime as needed to support production requirements. Additional pre and post shift time may be required for transition with other supervisors. Special projects and events may require modified scheduling in order to attend meetings held on days when work other shifts. Days worked are normally Monday through Friday, however Saturday work may be required during peak production times. On rare occasions, Sunday work may be required when demand is heavy.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting at a desk and in meetings, standing to observe subordinates and production-related issues, walking in order to inspect products and move from area to area, lifting of 70 lbs. when training employees or when assisting in work areas, stooping to look at defects, bending to inspect areas of equipment at floor level, climbing onto and into machines for operational troubleshooting after ensuring proper lock-out/tag-out procedures have been followed, crawling to gain access to equipment at floor level, hearing and sight to make observations, train others and communicate with personnel.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has full supervisory responsibilities for a crew of approximately 25 people. There are four supervisors per shift. Actual numbers may vary, based on the value stream requirements. Tasks include: participate in interview and selection process for new employees, assist with setting goals and objectives, conduct performance appraisals, train, assign and delegate tasks, coach and lead direct and indirect employees, influence outside support resources, ensure the production schedule is followed and variances are accounted for, and administer disciplinary action.
Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
