Job summary

EIS is seeking a Second Shift Production Supervisor to lead CNC machining operations, ensure safety, quality, and productivity on the floor, and provide real-time direction to a team of hourly employees.

The role requires hands-on leadership, strong problem-solving, and experience with ERP systems and shop floor control to drive continuous improvement across the second shift.

Qualifications

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Production and Shift Leadership

• Lead and oversee all second-shift production activities to achieve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity expectations.
• Establish daily work priorities and assign employees and resources based on production requirements.
• Monitor hour-by-hour production performance and take timely action when output falls behind established expectations.
• Maintain an active presence on the production floor and provide real-time direction and support to employees.
• Ensure employees remain engaged in assigned work, follow break and attendance expectations, complete required documentation, and comply with established work standards.
• Make timely decisions and adjust staffing, workflow, and production priorities as conditions change.
• Conduct shift meetings and ensure effective communication of safety concerns, quality issues, production priorities, and business updates.
• Provide clear shift handoffs regarding production status, equipment concerns, quality issues, and outstanding priorities.

Machining and Technical Support

• Serve as the primary technical resource for machining operations during second shift and provide hands-on support to operators as needed.
• Troubleshoot CNC machining, setup, tooling, workholding, and process issues that impact production.
• Demonstrate strong working knowledge of CNC machine operation, setups, tooling, offsets, feeds and speeds, and tool wear.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
• Understand CNC programs and G-code sufficiently to identify potential programming or process issues and make approved minor adjustments when appropriate.
• Support operators with machine setups, changeovers, tooling selection, work offsets, and process verification.
• Identify machining conditions such as chatter, poor surface finish, dimensional variation, tool failure, or process instability and determine appropriate corrective action.
• Verify that operators are following established setup documentation, work instructions, inspection requirements, and manufacturing processes.
• Recognize when an issue requires escalation to Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, or other technical resources and communicate sufficient technical detail to support resolution.
• Assist with machine operation or production activities when necessary to maintain workflow and meet customer requirements.

Quality and Process Control

• Ensure production is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, inspection requirements, and customer quality standards.
• Support first-part and in-process inspection activities and ensure operators understand required measurement methods and inspection frequency.
• Demonstrate working knowledge of precision measurement equipment including calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, bore gauges, and other applicable inspection tools.
• Stop or contain production when quality requirements are not being met and coordinate appropriate corrective action.
• Partner with Quality and Engineering to investigate recurring defects, scrap, and process variation.
• Ensure required production, quality, scrap, and traceability documentation is completed accurately.

Employee Leadership and Development

• Supervise, coach, and develop hourly production employees.
• Set clear performance and behavioral expectations and hold employees accountable for meeting established standards.
• Provide timely feedback and coaching regarding productivity, quality, safety, attendance, and workplace conduct.
• Address employee relations and performance concerns in partnership with Operations leadership and Human Resources.
• Complete performance reviews and maintain appropriate employee documentation.
• Identify employee skill gaps and coordinate training and cross-training to strengthen second-shift capabilities.
• Develop operators' technical skills and encourage employees to independently troubleshoot within the boundaries of their roles.

Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence

• Identify inefficiencies, recurring production problems, and opportunities to improve manufacturing processes.
• Participate in and support 5S, Lean, Kaizen, and other continuous improvement activities.
• Develop and implement action plans to improve productivity, reduce scrap, improve quality, and minimize downtime.
• Support standardized work and ensure established processes are consistently followed.
• Work with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Operations to identify and implement sustainable solutions to recurring production issues.

Systems and Performance Management

• Effectively utilize ERP systems for production reporting, shop floor control, labor reporting, and related operational activities.
• Set, monitor, and analyze departmental KPIs and use performance data to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ensure production transactions, labor reporting, scrap reporting, and other required system entries are accurate and completed timely.
• Maintain proficiency with Microsoft Office and other systems required to support production operations.

Safety

• Promote and enforce safe work practices throughout second shift.
• Ensure employees follow applicable PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and other established safety requirements.
• Immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors and elevate significant concerns as appropriate.
• Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Second Shift Production Supervisor directly supervises hourly production employees assigned to second shift and is responsible for daily work direction, staffing and workflow decisions, employee coaching and development, performance management, and enforcement of company expectations. This position is responsible for maintaining accountability for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and workplace conduct and works with Operations leadership and Human Resources when formal corrective action or additional employee relations support is required.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED is required; an associate or bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of three years of manufacturing or production experience is required, including significant hands‑on experience with CNC machining, machine setup, and manufacturing processes. Previous leadership or supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Candidates must demonstrate sufficient technical machining knowledge to independently troubleshoot production issues and provide effective support to machine operators during second shift. Experience with ERP systems, shop floor control, production planning, and inventory processes is preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to effectively communicate and understand job instructions both verbally and in writing in the English language. Must be able to clearly communicate production expectations, technical instructions, safety requirements, and performance feedback to employees and effectively communicate production or technical concerns to Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Operations leadership, and other departments.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform mathematical calculations required in a machining environment, including decimals, fractions, tolerances, basic geometry, and metric/standard conversions. Must be able to interpret dimensional requirements and apply calculations to machine setups, offsets, inspection results, and other practical manufacturing situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect and evaluate relevant information, establish facts, identify root causes, and make sound decisions in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. Must be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical instructions, and manufacturing data and apply that information to troubleshoot machining and production problems. The position requires the ability to independently evaluate competing priorities and determine when an issue can be resolved on the floor versus when additional technical or leadership support is required.
