Job summary

SMS Mill Services, LLC in Mingo Junction, OH seeks an experienced Production Supervisor to lead daily operations on a JSW liffs steel mill site. You will manage a unionized workforce, drive productivity, and ensure safety across 12-hour rotating shifts.

Responsibilities include coordinating scrap/slag operations, reporting to management, and enforcing SOPs while pursuing cost reductions and continuous improvement. Four weeks vacation and comprehensive benefits are included.

• Lead a production team and optimize shift performance to maximize production and minimize costs.
• Ensure a safe workplace and enforce PPE compliance.
• Prepare daily reports and provide information to management; oversee inspections and checklists.
• Meet KPIs to achieve or exceed efficiency targets.
• Coordinate mill service activities such as scrap handling, rail services, and environmental duties.
• Ensure proper completion of paperwork (toolbox talks, timesheets, permits).
• Ensure compliance with SOPs and safety policies across production operations.
• Drive continuous improvement and cost-saving initiatives.

SMS Mill Services LLC (“SMS”) is a leader in the steel mill services industry. SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our services include, but are not limited to, scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.

SMS is seeking an experienced and safety-driven Production Supervisor to join our team in Mingo Junction, OH. This frontline operations leadership role, located on the JSW liffs steel mill property, is responsible for supervising the daily activities of unionized employees, optimizing workforce utilization, driving productivity, maintaining a safe work environment, and supporting cost-effective operations.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure a safe workplace. Lead by example and adhere to safety requirements in a scrap and slag yard environment. Always wear proper PPE and address any employee not adhering to PPE requirements.
• Lead a production team and effectively manage each shift to maximize production and minimize costs.
• Prepare daily reports and provide information to management as needed, including ensuring all inspections and operation checklists required to be completed by hourly employees are prepared and submitted appropriately.
• Meet KPl's (Key Performance Indicators) to meet or exceed efficiency and performance standards.
• Control and coordination of mill service activities as delegated, including:
  1. Scrap unloading and loading.
  2. Scrap breaking, shearing and cutting (in conjunction with supervisor of the burning floor)
  3. Rental work with personnel and equipment
  4. Environmental services
  5. MR Plant Operations
  6. Scrap inspection
  7. Timely rail services to the Customer.
  8. Rail car repair
• Ensure correct completion of all job-specific, employee-related paperwork including toolbox talks, daily activity sheet, timesheets and designated work permits.
• Ensure employee compliance with standard operating procedures for all production operations.
• Work safely at all times and ensure employees adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and requirements while performing their job duties.
• Implement and drive continuous improvement.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including Environmental, Safety and Health guidelines and best practices, including mitigating risks associated with contractors and vendor insurance and indemnification.
• Comply with cost savings initiatives, identify and recognize ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue, including treating any company expenses the same as you would if it was your own money.
• Function as part of the management team and align with core values to meet company policies and goals.
• Establish and maintain qood housekeeping practices to eliminate hazards to employees.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of management experience in a heavy industrial service sector
• Experience working in a unionized environment preferred
• Bachelor's degree preferred

Physical Demands

Ability to walk more than 1000 yards; stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift and carry no more than 50 lbs.; climb stairs and/or ladders; stooping; crawling; reaching; handling; pushing; pulling; twisting; kneeling; squatting; seeing; speaking; hearing; problem solving, discretion and independent judgment; regular and dependable attendance.

Requires physical exertion with exposure to natural elements -- working in scrap processing and production environment at an active steel mill.
