Job Title: Production Operator

Position Reports To: Production Supervisor

FLSA Status: Full-time; Non-Exempt

• The Chemical Production Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently performing production activities associated with the manufacturing of water-soluble lubricants and flammable products. This position works independently to complete all assigned production activities while following established operating procedures, safety requirements, and quality standards.
• The Operator is responsible for accurately documenting, verifying, and approving Quality Control and Line Clearance procedures, as well as maintaining batch records, batch folders, and other production planning and documentation. The position requires a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a chemical manufacturing environment.

Schedule Requirements:

This position works a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, which includes both day and night shifts:

• Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
• Night Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Rotating Schedule: 4 nights on / 3 days off; 3 days on / 1 day off; 3 nights on / 3 days off; 4 days on / 7 days off

This position requires flexibility to work both day and night shifts as part of the rotating schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Key duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Production and Equipment Operation

• Set up, operate, and perform routine maintenance on production equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Load and package chemicals, ensuring all products are correctly packaged and labeled.
• Operate forklifts and tractors to move materials and bulk containers around the facility and perform forklift inspections.
• Monitor critical process data and record it in the computer system and on hard-copy SOP forms.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

• Maintain production machines and facility equipment; troubleshoot and diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, and test and adjust equipment.
• Perform emergency and unscheduled repairs to production equipment during production.
• Use a variety of hand and power tools, electrical testing meters, and material handling equipment.
• Detect faulty operations and defective materials and report these and any unusual conditions to appropriate personnel.

Safety, Security, and Compliance

• Identify and understand the properties and hazards of the chemicals handled.
• Work safely in accordance with OSHA guidelines and all applicable environmental and safety regulations.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Respond quickly in an emergency, notify appropriate personnel, and follow established safety protocols.
• Maintain off-shift plant security in accordance with all applicable Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requirements.

Communication and Teamwork

• Provide clear shift-to-shift communication with other operators on plant status and problems.
• Communicate daily with management regarding operations status and issues.
• Maintain routine contact with other shift operators, providing safety backup and assistance in their areas as needed.

The operator is also responsible for other duties as assigned and may be required to work in other departments as determined by plant management.

Requirements

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing plant; chemical manufacturing preferred.

Skills and Abilities

• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow work instructions for specific job functions.
• Intermediate to advanced math skills.
• Knowledge of the safe handling of flammable materials.
• Advanced computer skills, including the ability to work in SAP.
• Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
• Ability to work overtime, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Conditions of Employment

Candidates must pass a Department of Homeland Security background check, a pre-placement physical (including respirator clearance), and a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Demands

• Stand for long periods and walk on flat surfaces, slight inclines, and rough or uneven surfaces.
• Climb ladders to repair machinery or inspect processes, and maintain balance on narrow, slippery, or steep surfaces.
• Lift or carry objects weighing more than 50 lbs., including oversized objects.
• Push or pull heavy objects weighing more than 50 lbs., or requiring 100 lbs. of force or more, to move equipment, raw materials, drums, and similar items.
• Bend, stoop, and kneel to work on equipment or machinery, and reach below the waist, from waist to shoulder, and above the shoulder.
• Work in extremely confined and cramped positions from time to time.
• Make careful finger movements, grasp objects with fingers and palms, and hold arms and hands steady while performing tasks.
• Make repetitive arm and hand movements to handle products.
• Read and follow written instructions.
• Speak and hear well enough to interact with all plant groups and the plant's environmental consultants.

Work Environment

• Industrial chemical environment requiring various personal protective equipment (PPE), including full-face respirators.
• Outdoor work with exposure to temperatures below freezing and above 90°F for periods of more than one hour.
• Loud areas requiring hearing protection, and exposure to vibration.
• Night work.
