Job description

PRODUCTION ENGINEER (STARSHIP ELECTRONICS)

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today, SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

The Starship Electronics team has taken on the challenge to develop hardware for the Starship spacecraft and SuperHeavy booster. In this role, you will support the production of all electrical systems, including communications, power, navigation, and crewed life support. This vehicle will be one of the most sophisticated and largest flown in space, requiring low cost and high production rates to enable the mission.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, standardize, and improve process chains for delivering Starship Electronics components
  • Design and implement new factory stations and production assets to expand capability, reduce cycle time, and improve yield
  • Create mechanical tooling for building, testing, and delivering avionics hardware, including fixturing and automation equipment
  • Develop design-for-manufacturing (DFM) guidelines and collaborate with design engineering for co-design
  • Apply expertise in low-cost, high-reliability manufacturing techniques for aerospace electro-mechanical components
  • Guide vehicle architecture and trade studies to reduce cost and facilitate production
  • Analyze root causes and implement corrective actions for process escapes or variability in mechanical and electrical processes
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, or industrial engineering
  • At least 1 year of manufacturing engineering experience through projects, research, internships, or professional roles
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Experience sharing information and influencing across organizational lines
  • Ability to work independently and in teams under demanding conditions
  • Strong communication skills for presentations and reporting
  • Proficiency in mechanical design tools such as CAD, FEA, GD&T, and tolerance analysis
  • Experience with PCB fabrication, PCBA assembly, and DFM requirements
  • Experience designing production systems for controllers, sensors, cameras, optics, or RF communications
  • Knowledge of PFMEA and implementing corrective actions
  • Experience automating processes and capital equipment integration
  • Background in high-volume or high-reliability manufacturing environments
  • Ability to analyze and reduce processing costs
  • Programming skills in SQL, Python, or similar languages
Additional Requirements:
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be necessary
  • Occasional travel to Starbase, Texas, or vendor sites
Compensation and Benefits:

Salary range varies by level: $95,000 - $115,000 for Level I, and $110,000 - $130,000 for Level II. Actual salary depends on experience and skills.

Additional benefits include stock options, bonuses, comprehensive health coverage, 401(k), paid leave, and other perks.
