Job description

Location: Remote or Asheville, NC

Start Date: ASAP - Fall 2025

Hours: 5-20 hours/week (variable)

Rate: $21-$30 /hour

We are seeking a freelance Production Editor to support our editorial and publishing processes across a variety of instructional content. The Production Editor will primarily focus on copyediting and proofreading web-based course materials, including political science texts and potentially other subject areas.

This role plays a key part in ensuring that our digital courseware meets the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and usability. You’ll collaborate with our experienced production team to polish instructional content and help deliver a seamless learning experience for students.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and proofread webtext content—including narrative, tables, charts, and interactive elements—ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to Soomo editorial style and accessibility standards

  • Perform light fact-checking and flag content that requires citations or verification

  • Quickly familiarize yourself with individual webtexts to maintain a big-picture perspective when editing

  • Identify unclear passages or awkward phrasing and suggest improvements

  • Support pre-publication checks to ensure error-free final content

  • Communicate with the Lead Production Editor and Executive Editor via Slack, Zoom, Google Docs, and other tools to revise and finalize content

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in copyediting and proofing, ideally of student-facing educational materials

  • Comfort with editing/proofing content in HTML and JSON formats

  • Familiarity with style guides such as Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) and APA; experience adapting to in-house editorial standards

  • Strong sense of what makes writing engaging, clear, and effective

  • Ability to consistently produce high-quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Curious, collaborative, and not afraid to ask clarifying questions

Bonus points if you have experience with:

  • Experience with XML, YAML, RegEx, or other markup/programming languages

  • Familiarity with multi-cursor tools and version control workflows

  • Background in graphic design, content production, or digital publishing
