Job summary

Coherent Corp. in Budd Lake, NJ is seeking an Optical / Semiconductor Fabrication Technician to support R&D, production, and high-volume manufacturing of laser optic products.

The role involves crystal fabrication, equipment maintenance, and process improvement, with a 12-hour shift on a 4/3 rotating schedule. Responsibilities include operating fabrication tools, following drawings, recording data, and ensuring safety and environmental compliance.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent with fabrication/machining training.
• Associate degree in engineering technology is a plus.
• Minimum 3 years of relevant fabrication/machine shop experience in optics or semiconductor manufacturing.
• Experience operating and repairing fabrication tools in semiconductor/optical environment.
• Ability to read CAD drawings for machining/fabrication of parts and ingots.
• Comfortably handling and loading/unloading high-value crystals.
• Ability to work independently and improve shop operations.
• Experience with MS Office, spreadsheets, access, graphics, Email, MRP systems, and accounting software.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain fabrication equipment including x-ray diffraction orientation grinding and inspection tooling.
• Follow technical drawings, specifications, and production procedures.
• Use precision measuring tools and testing equipment.
• Record production data, test results, and material usage.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance and troubleshoot process issues.
• Handle chemicals and materials safely according to workplace procedures.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and contamination-controlled work area.
• Follow safety, quality-control, and environmental regulations.
• Collaborate with engineers and production staff to improve processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain fabrication equipment including x-ray diffraction orientation grinding and inspection tooling
• Follow technical drawings, specifications, and production procedures

Education & Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent plus additional training in fabrication/machining practices
• An associate's degree in field of engineering technology is a plus.
• Minimum 3 years of relevant fabrication and machine shop experience in an optics or semiconductor manufacturing support environment
• Demonstrated ability to operate, maintain and repair fabrication process tools (Multi Wire-Saws, Cylindrical Grinders, X-Ray Orientation Equipment, Cleaning Benches, etc.) in a semiconductor or optical materials environment
• Familiarity with general machine tools (mill, lathe, etc.) in a model shop environment
• Ability to read CAD drawings in the machining/fabrication of equipment parts, tools, semiconductor ingots and substrates
• Must be comfortable carefully handling and loading/unloading high-value and heavy crystals
• Demonstrated ability to maintain shop operations independently
• Ability to recommend and implement improvements
• Experience with networked PC based computer system (MS Office, spreadsheets, access, graphics, Email, MRP systems, and accounting software)
