Job description

WHO WE ARE

Nova Credit is a credit infrastructure and analytics company that enables businesses to grow responsibly by harnessing alternative credit data. The company leverages its unique data infrastructure, industry‑leading analytics & FCRA‑compliance to help lenders fill in the gaps that exist in traditional credit analytics. Nova Credit provides access to the fragmented universe of consumer financial data and transforms it into compliant, actionable risk analytics through a suite of solutions designed to increase conversion through expanded coverage, speed, and reliability. Nova Credit supports over 7,000 businesses including organizations such as HSBC, SoFi, Scotiabank, Appfolio, and Yardi, who work with Nova Credit to make smarter credit decisions through cash flow underwriting with Cash Atlas™, quickly and accurately verify income with Income Navigator, verify income and assets with Eligibility Compass, and reach new‑to‑country consumers with Credit Passport®. We were recently named in Forbes’ Fintech 50 in 2025 and Built In’s Best Places to Work, 2025.

Nova Credit offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment where you can meaningfully impact the lives of people historically excluded from the credit system. We value diversity, intellectual honesty, and innovation and are committed to supporting our team members' professional growth and development. If you're passionate about leveraging technology to drive financial inclusion, we want to hear from you!

THE OPPORTUNITY

Nova Credit’s Legal & Compliance team is focused on helping the company grow while guiding it through its legal, contractual, and regulatory obligations. Operating in a highly regulated industry, the L&C teams are an essential part of Nova Credit’s business and strategy. In this highly cross‑functional role, you would be relied upon for your legal acumen and have broad exposure to Nova Credit’s business operations and product development process.

Our business is complex, and as a team member, you would frequently be asked to help clarify multifaceted issues. If you’re an attorney who loves wrestling with complex problems, coming up with simple and practical solutions, and is always striving for ways to move the business forward, we’d love to hear from you!

This is a NYC-based hybrid role (3 days per week in office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays), full‑time position reporting to the General Counsel.

WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH, YOU'LL:
  • Get to know Nova Credit's organizational structure, key agreements, and legal processes
  • Develop a foundational understanding of the regulatory environment that impacts us and our customers, including FCRA, CCPA/CPRA and other US state privacy laws, GLBA, UK GDPR, Canada's PIPEDA and provincial frameworks, Fair Lending, and Fair Housing
  • Understand our product offerings and market, and how it all developed: the legal team's involvement at various stages, and processes that may be led versus supported by legal team members
  • Get to know the company's working style, goals, mission, and values
  • Become acquainted with fellow Novans in our team and across the company, as well as key cross‑functional stakeholders in product, engineering, data science, and security
WITHIN THE FIRST QUARTER, YOU'LL:
  • Dive deeper into Nova Credit's products, key regulatory features, risks, challenges, and areas for future development with particular attention to how privacy obligations interact with products and processes
  • Work hand‑in‑hand with the product, data science, and engineering teams on new features and product development, embedding privacy‑by‑design principles and identifying broader regulatory considerations early in the process
  • Conduct a thorough review of Nova Credit's existing privacy documentation and identify gaps or areas for improvement
  • Start to advise the business on product requirements and limitations across privacy and consumer finance regulatory frameworks
  • Get to know the credit reporting and analysis industry, including bureaus, financial institutions, credit providers, and other fintechs
  • Review and develop a deep understanding of company policies and procedures, and support ongoing corporate organizational management projects
WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, YOU'LL:
  • Become a key advisor and first point of call for legal and regulatory risks and issues associated with products and features, spanning privacy, consumer financial data regulations, and adjacent requirements
  • Own and continuously maintain Nova Credit's global privacy program, including policies, notices, procedures, data subject rights processes and training materials
  • Guide our product, engineering, and data teams in navigating privacy and related regulatory frameworks, and serve as a thought partner on new ideas for our product strategies
  • Coordinate and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure consistent implementation of legal guidance and alignment on risk
  • Keep up on the rapidly evolving privacy and regulatory landscape, including new state privacy law enactments, regulatory guidance, and enforcement trends, and proactively revise and update policies, forms, and agreements where necessary
  • Help our Go‑to‑Market and marketing teams with respect to product positioning and completing privacy, regulatory, and compliance reviews by customers
  • Work on cross‑functional company initiatives and other special projects as the business grows
YOUR SKILLSET
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active bar membership; 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful time in‑house or at a firm advising clients in fintech, financial services, consumer technology, or data‑intensive industries
  • Demonstrated expertise in US and global privacy law
  • Proven ability to navigate complex, heavily regulated environments, translating regulatory requirements into practical business guidance; comfort advising across multiple regulatory frameworks simultaneously rather than within a single specialty
  • Experience advising product, data, and engineering teams on complex and ambiguous legal concepts: able to issue‑spot early, articulate risk clearly, and propose practical solutions in a fast‑moving environment
  • Familiarity with FCRA, Fair Lending, Fair Housing, or other consumer financial regulations is a plus; prior exposure to the consumer financial data or credit reporting space is highly valued

$223,300 - $281,400 per year The above compensation range is for US‑based candidates and is dependent on individual experience, skills, education, location, and qualifications. We consider all elements of compensation to be a part of the value we provide to Novans. This may include base salary, equity grants, incentive compensation for eligible roles, professional development, flexible PTO, and tenure rewards. In the U.S., our benefits package includes comprehensive and generously subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance options, along with a company‑sponsored 401k plan, parental leave of absence, sick time off, and paid time off vacation.

Everyone is welcome at Nova Credit. We are an equal‑opportunity employer where diversity and inclusion are central pillars of our company strategy. We seek applicants who understand, embrace, and thrive in a multicultural and globalized world. We do not discriminate on the basis of any protected class, including race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We do not consider criminal history until a conditional offer of employment has been made. We encourage all qualified candidates, including those with a criminal history, to apply.
