Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Product Owner to lead the evolution of a homegrown policy administration platform undergoing a significant rebuild and refactoring effort across multiple insurance product lines.

The platform is an important component of the organization's insurance technology ecosystem and requires a Product Owner who can connect business strategy, insurance operations, and technology execution.

This person will own the product direction and day-to-day prioritization required to move the platform forward, working closely with business stakeholders, technology teams, and external development partners.

Initially, the Product Owner will coordinate extensively with external vendors and delivery resources. As the organization's internal capabilities mature, the role may evolve to include greater ownership of the team and delivery organization.

This is a contract-to-hire opportunity intended for someone interested in building long-term ownership of the platform rather than simply completing a defined implementation.

Responsibilities
  • Own and communicate the product vision and roadmap for a homegrown policy administration platform.
  • Lead product planning associated with a significant platform rebuild and refactoring initiative.
  • Translate business and insurance requirements into clear product priorities, features, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Own and continuously refine the product backlog.
  • Lead backlog grooming, prioritization, sprint preparation, and product decision-making.
  • Partner closely with underwriting, operations, technology, and other business stakeholders.
  • Coordinate delivery with external technology vendors and development partners.
  • Manage competing requirements and priorities across multiple insurance products and business stakeholders.
  • Ensure product decisions account for both immediate delivery needs and the long‑term architecture and scalability of the platform.
  • Create transparency around priorities, dependencies, tradeoffs, and product decisions.
  • Support implementation and modernization of policy administration capabilities across multiple product lines.
  • Help establish stronger internal product-management practices as the organization reduces its reliance on external vendors.
  • Potentially assume broader team leadership responsibilities as the internal organization evolves.
Qualifications
  • Significant experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager, or similar technology product leader.
  • Strong knowledge of the insurance industry and insurance products.
  • Direct experience with policy administration systems and/or policy administration implementations.
  • Experience leading significant platform modernization, implementation, rebuild, or refactoring initiatives.
  • Strong product-road mapping and backlog-management capabilities. Demonstrated experience translating business objectives into actionable technology priorities.
  • Strong stakeholder-management skills and the ability to navigate competing priorities across business and technology teams.
  • Experience managing or coordinating external development vendors.
  • Strong understanding of Agile software development and the Product Owner role within Agile teams.
  • Ability to operate independently and make decisions in an environment where every process or framework may not yet be established.
  • Comfortable moving between strategic product thinking and highly tactical delivery work.
The Environment

This is a transformation environment with many characteristics of a startup operating inside an established insurance organization. The team is simultaneously modernizing technology, establishing internal capabilities, and creating more scalable ways of working.

The right Product Owner will thrive in an environment that requires autonomy, resilience, strong judgment, and a willingness to build the framework while delivering the product.
