Job summary

OpenAI, Inc. in San Francisco is seeking a senior software engineer to build the services and runtime capabilities behind persistent agents. You will design, implement, and operate backend systems that support agent workflows across products and ensure reliability at scale.

You will own projects from design through launch and production, collaborating with Research, Product, and infrastructure teams to deliver robust infrastructure with safe interfaces and clear abstractions.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with ownership of backend systems or developer platforms.
• Experience designing, shipping, and operating production services, APIs, and data models.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services, APIs, and reusable runtime primitives that support agent experiences across products.
• Build systems for persistent agent state, asynchronous execution, orchestration, and progress reporting so agents carry work forward over time.
• Develop infrastructure that connects agents with tools and execution environments with clear interfaces.
• Improve reliability, scalability, and performance through observability and production debugging.
• Partner with Product, Research, and engineering teams to translate needs into reusable infrastructure.
• Own projects end to end, balancing rapid iteration with maintainable architecture.
