Job description

Job Title: Product Engineer Aftertreatment Hardware Testing & Validation

Job Description

This role focuses on planning, executing, and supporting vehicle powertrain and engine dynamometer testing to rigorously validate low-emission technologies against future emissions standards. The Product Engineer will lead emissions calibration development, perform detailed data analysis, and communicate technical findings to cross-functional engineering teams while ensuring test activities align with program goals and timelines.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, execute, and support vehicle powertrain and engine dynamometer testing at internal facilities and external vendor locations to validate low-emission technologies against future emission standards, including cycles such as ACCII Stand Alone US06.
  • Proactively identify potential calibration concerns or issues encountered during testing and clearly report these findings to technical specialists for resolution and guidance.
  • Perform post-processing of test data files (e.g., ATI Rec files) using supplied or vendor tools, extracting and analyzing key statistics critical for emissions compliance and calibration assessment.
  • Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of emissions test data, extract key insights, and provide data-driven recommended actions to optimize calibrations and address identified issues.
  • Summarize test findings, data analysis results, and recommended actions in clear, concise, and impactful presentations using tools such as boxplots and modal cumulative plots to communicate complex technical information to technical experts and other stakeholders.
  • Track and maintain accurate records of test vehicle status, including fuel types, hardware configurations, calibration levels, and any relevant modifications to ensure proper test asset management.
  • Actively participate in test planning to ensure that testing activities align with program goals, timelines, and required development milestones.
  • Prepare and submit weekly Test Requests (TRs) to facilitate, schedule, and coordinate required testing activities with internal and external test facilities.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate full-cycle emissions calibrations, including cold start, warm-up, and hot stabilized conditions, specifically targeting SULEV30, ACCII, and Tier 4 gaseous and particulate matter tailpipe emissions standards.
  • Execute predefined test plans and ensure accurate data acquisition, data integrity, and proper documentation of test procedures, findings, and next steps.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including spreadsheets, reports, and presentations, to clearly communicate testing performed, results, conclusions, and recommended future actions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve complex technical issues, support issue resolution, and contribute to project planning and management activities for large, complex programs.
Essential Skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to carefully examine data and break down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts.
  • Structured problem-solving capabilities, including use of methodologies such as DMAIC to address and resolve technical issues.
  • Experience in test planning, including developing test plans and designing experiments (DOE) to evaluate multiple changes and solutions.
  • Data acquisition skills, including developing data acquisition lists and recording data using appropriate acquisition software.
  • Data analysis skills, including plotting data appropriately to draw conclusions and make informed decisions.
  • Data integrity skills, including verifying that data is valid, ensuring proper sample rates and alignment, and confirming values are reasonable for expected parameter ranges.
  • Data management skills, including developing naming conventions and storage systems that allow others to easily locate and use files.
  • Technical communication skills, with the ability to discuss aftertreatment and emissions topics effectively with co-workers and technical stakeholders.
  • Technical documentation skills, including the ability to organize data into documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that clearly communicate testing performed, findings, and next steps.
  • Calibration skills, including evaluating data and developing changes to engine emissions calibrations to reduce tailpipe emissions and optimize aftertreatment performance.
  • Testing skills, including executing predefined test plans and ensuring accurate and reliable test execution.
  • Bachelors degree (BS) in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Approximately 3 years of experience in emissions and emissions testing.
  • Approximately 3 years of experience demonstrating a fundamental understanding of internal combustion engine function.
  • Solid understanding of emissions regulations, certification processes, and technologies effective in reducing emissions.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and high technical aptitude.
  • Strong leadership skills with a passion for quality and customer focus, demonstrating an inherent self-starter mindset and strong drive for results.
