Job description

Quest for Justice creates new pathways to justice with LeanCourt and LeanPractice.

Our LeanCourt product builds safe, AI-powered guided interviews that help self-represented litigants prepare court forms, ensuring courts receive correct filings the first time. Our guided interviews are multilingual, ADA-compliant, and customized to each court’s local rules.

Our LeanPractice product gives law firms an AI-powered case management system. It automates the repetitive work of a legal practice, such as intake, document generation, deadline tracking, and case preparation. This allows attorneys to focus on key decisions and final sign-offs.

We apply Lean principles to the business and how we build our software. As an AI-first company, we use AI-assisted development tools every day to design, build, test, and ship. AI has changed how software is built, so we keep our teams small to give each person real ownership of the platform they work on.

About the Role

This role works on our LeanCourt product. We're looking for an engineer who cares more about outcomes for real users than about the exact implementation or the tools used.

You partner with a Platform Operator, who owns the product direction and the customer outcomes for a market segment. You report to the Platform Operator and own how the product gets built: implementation, automation, and developer experience. You also talk directly with customers, bring your own opinions on the roadmap, and make design decisions on your own to create a better experience for users.

Our platforms turn successful applications into reusable tools. With these tools, we can create new applications quickly for new jurisdictions, markets, and use cases.

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain platform capabilities, frameworks, and reusable components
  • Find opportunities to simplify, automate, and accelerate platform development
  • Shape the roadmap with your Platform Operator, and suggest better ways to solve the user's problem
  • Ship features end to end, from understanding the user's problem to running in production
  • Improve platform usability, maintainability, and developer experience
  • Help turn successful applications into reusable platforms that support new jurisdictions and use cases
  • Work directly with customers and subject matter experts, such as court clerks, attorneys, and judges, to understand their requirements
  • Test, deploy, and support the platform features that you build, and take part in code reviews
Qualifications
  • Senior-level experience in professional software development
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and systems thinking
  • Full-stack experience, including web applications, APIs, SQL, and database schema design
  • Product sense: caring about why something is built and how people use it, not only how it works
  • Demonstrated experience with modern AI-assisted development tools
  • Ability to work independently with strong ownership while collaborating effectively with teammates and stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills, including with non-technical customers
  • Pride in work that creates leverage and helps other people move faster
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a startup environment
Preferred
  • Experience in legal technology, court systems, or guided interview tools
Work Environment and Benefits
  • Full-time and fully remote (US)
  • Salary range: $142,000 - $195,000
  • Flexible working hours (on-call availability outside business hours on rare occasions)
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Paid time off: about 22 days per year at full time
  • Sick time: about 7 days per year at full time
  • All federal holidays paid (11 per year)
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • 401(k)
Interview Process

We want our process to be clear and respectful of your time. From application to final round, expect about 4 hours. All interviews will be conducted virtually.

  • Application (about 30 minutes). Submit your resume and answer a few short questions about your experience, how you use AI-assisted development tools, and your interest in legal technology. These answers replace a phone screen.
  • Initial interview (60 minutes). Meet one of our Platform Operators, who owns one of our products. We'll talk about your past projects, how you think about platforms and reusable tools, and how you work with non-technical colleagues and customers.
  • Live technical session (90 minutes). You'll build a small, realistic feature with your own editor and AI tool, while you share your screen and talk through your thinking. We'll send you a short brief and starter code the day before, so you can set up your tools.
  • Final round (60 minutes). Meet our two co-founders to talk about our company values and how we work. We'll also get to know you, so we can both decide whether it's a good fit.
