About the role

Peepel is building the platform that simplifies people management for businesses. We connect HR, payroll, fleet, and workforce tools into one seamless experience — so companies can focus on their people, not their processes. We don't separate "product" from "engineering." Our product engineers own the full delivery lifecycle: they talk to customers, understand problems deeply, shape solutions, and ship them. You won't be executing someone else's specs — you'll be the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) who decides what to build and why, then builds it. You care as much about what you build as how you build it. We ship fast, keep things simple, and leverage managed services wherever possible. You'll report to our CTO and work directly with customers, partners, and designers to make trade-offs that maximise value while minimising complexity.

Responsibilities

• Own features end-to-end — from understanding the customer problem through architecture, implementation, shipping, and iteration
• Talk to customers directly to understand their problems, validate solutions, and remove points of friction
• Shape requirements before writing code: research the problem space, explore solutions, and define what "good" looks like
• Design and implement back‑end architecture for our API, integrations, and data layer
• Build and expand integrations with third‑party HR, payroll, and fleet providers across our marketplace
• Work with the "garage door up" — share research, UI explorations, API designs, and trade‑offs transparently
• Keep the platform scalable and performant as our customer base grows
• Use AI coding tools fluently — they're a multiplier, not a crutch. We expect engineers to know when to lean on them and when to think for themselves.
• Mentor peer developers, review pull requests, and raise the bar on engineering quality

Requirements

• We don't care how many years you've been doing this. We care what you've shipped. Show us production systems you've owned end-to-end, integrations you've untangled, gnarly bugs you've fixed in someone else's code. A side project that thousands of people use beats a decade of résumé bullets.
• Fluent in TypeScript and Node.js — enough to be dangerous in a real codebase on day one
• Strong data affinity — experience with relational databases, ORMs, data pipelines, or integration architectures
• You think in terms of customer problems, not just tickets. You shape requirements, not just execute them.
• Ability to break large initiatives into small, shippable increments — and re‑prioritise when opportunities arise
• Intellectually curious, independently driven, and passionate about great products
• A growth mindset, high emotional intelligence, and strong communication skills
• Pragmatic: you keep technical debt in check but know when to ship and iterate
• Fluent in English and willing to work hybrid from our Ghent office
