Job description

Build the Technology Behind Mission Critical Systems

At Abaco Systems, our engineers develop rugged embedded computing solutions used in some of the world's most demanding aerospace, defense, and industrial environments. We are looking for a Product Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and wants ownership of products from concept through qualification, production, and sustainment.

This is not a narrowly focused design role or a pure test role. Product Engineers work across architecture, hardware integration, verification, qualification, manufacturing transition, and customer support to deliver successful products and programs.

Position Summary

The Product Engineer is responsible for the technical execution of rugged embedded computing products throughout their lifecycle.

Depending on program assignment, a Product Engineer may serve as the primary technical design lead or the primary verification and qualification lead while remaining engaged across the entire product lifecycle.

This role combines systems thinking, engineering execution, technical leadership, problem-solving, and customer interaction into a single product focused position.

What You'll Do
  • Develop and refine technical solutions for rugged embedded computing products.
  • Translate customer and product requirements into practical, manufacturable designs.
  • Support product architecture development and technical decision making.
  • Lead hardware integration, bring-up, troubleshooting, and system validation activities.
  • Develop test strategies and support product verification and qualification testing.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical customer interactions.
  • Collaborate with embedded software, test software, electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Support environmental qualification activities including thermal, vibration, and environmental testing.
  • Manage technical risk and drive issues to resolution.
  • Support production transition, sustaining engineering, and lifecycle management activities.
  • Utilize Jira and Microsoft Project to support engineering execution and program visibility.
  • Coordinate technical activities with suppliers and external engineering partners when required.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience developing, integrating, testing, or troubleshooting complex electronic systems.
  • Understanding of embedded computing architectures and electronic hardware.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware, firmware, and software interactions.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience working within cross functional engineering teams.
  • Strong communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ownership, initiative, and sound engineering judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with rugged embedded computing systems.
  • Experience with VPX, OpenVPX, SOSA, or similar modular architectures.
  • Experience with GPUs, FPGAs, high-speed digital interfaces, networking, or storage technologies.
  • Experience with environmental qualification testing.
  • Experience with manufacturing transition and production support.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project and Jira.
  • Experience with schematic capture or PCB layout tools.
  • Experience working with aerospace or defense customers.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 development environments and configuration management practices.
Why Join Abaco Systems?
Product Ownership
  • Work across the complete product lifecycle rather than owning only a small portion of the design.
Technical Variety
  • Engage with hardware, software, integration, qualification, production, and customer-facing activities.
Meaningful Applications
  • Help develop computing platforms that support demanding aerospace, defense, and mission-critical applications.
Growth Opportunities
  • Develop broad technical expertise while working alongside experienced engineers, subject matter experts, and technical leaders.
Collaborative Engineering Environment
  • Partner with electrical, software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and program teams to deliver complex products.
Success In This Role
  • Deliver technically sound products.
  • Solve complex integration and verification challenges.
  • Communicate effectively across organizations and with customers.
  • Balance performance, schedule, cost, quality, and manufacturability considerations.
  • Take ownership of technical outcomes.
  • Help move products from concept to production with confidence and discipline.
