Job summary

BWI Group in Brighton, MI is seeking a Product Engineer to join our Brakes Team to design, develop, and validate components for automotive brake products. The role involves leading prototype builds and providing engineering support across quality, suppliers, and plant improvement initiatives.

The ideal candidate has a mechanical engineering degree, strong analytical ability, and excellent communication skills, with proficiency in MS Word/Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, development, and validation process for components of our automotive Brake products.
  • Provide product engineering expertise to support quality analysis, supplier development, and plant continuous improvement activities.
  • Lead prototype builds.
  • Conduct & champion design related cost reduction activities; coordinate meetings and activities, conduct verification testing, communicate with product groups, follow change procedures.
  • Institute problem solving strategies, facilitate quality issues, review & approve inspection reports and report out at meetings as necessary.
  • Issue and follow all necessary paperwork/reports for design changes, engineering permits, verification testing, product change methodology sheets and product/material specification changes.
  • Design, validate and release engineering drawings that meet customer requirements.

BWI Group is a premier chassis supplier that designs and manufactures brake and suspension systems for the global transportation market. BWI Group is seeking a Product Engineer to join our Brakes Team in Brighton, MI.

Job Responsibilities
  • Participate in the design, development, and validation process for components of our automotive Brake products
  • Provide product engineering expertise to support quality analysis, supplier development, and plant continuous improvement activities
  • Lead prototype builds

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Moderate level of hands‑on mechanical skill
  • Familiarity with Unigraphics, geometric tolerance (GD&T), and statistical analysis
  • General knowledge of suspension system operations and functionality
TRAVEL REQUIRED (%)

>50% travel to meet customers and suppliers with day travel to the various manufacturing facilities as required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Ability to use and understand Windows Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint, Microsoft (email). This is additional to the computer skill requirements as stated in the requirement qualifications.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Able to read and understand engineering prints/drawings. Good level of analytical skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to work on a team. Ability to guide the efforts of support personnel. Good teambuilding skills.
