Job description

Lead the end-to-end product experience for SoniCloud, from user research and information architecture through interaction design, validation, and implementation partnership. You'll be our first dedicated design hire, so you’re here to establish a system. The role starts with the workflows our customers rely on every day (dashboards, alarm workflows, compliance reporting, mobile) and intentionally expands into product shaping — discovery, roadmap input, and acceptance criteria — as you establish standards.

Product Designer (UI/UX + Frontend)

Lead the end-to-end product experience for SoniCloud, from user research and information architecture through interaction design, validation, and implementation partnership. You'll be our first dedicated design hire, so you’re here to establish a system. The role starts with the workflows our customers rely on every day (dashboards, alarm workflows, compliance reporting, mobile) and intentionally expands into product shaping — discovery, roadmap input, and acceptance criteria — as you establish standards.

Company Description

We are an Internet of Things (IoT) company specializing in remote monitoring applications for regulated industries. Our cloud platform, SoniCloud, aggregates real-time sensor data and automates alarms and compliance reporting across hospitals, labs, and pharmacies. Our users are lab managers, pharmacy techs, and facilities staff — people who need to trust what's on the screen at 2 a.m. when an alarm fires. We're located in Indianapolis, IN and this is a fully on-site role (M–F). Please note, we will not sponsor a Visa for this position.

What you’ll do
  • Own the end-to-end design of SoniCloud: research, flows, wireframes, high-fidelity UI, and prototypes — then ship the frontend implementation yourself.
  • Own design review for everything that ships. Establish a lightweight design review and design QA process that improves consistency without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
  • Lead an incremental modernization of SoniCloud’s user experience, including navigation, information architecture, core workflows, visual design, and interaction patterns.
  • Partner with engineering to establish and maintain our design system: components, patterns, typography, color, and accessibility standards that hold up across both the web platform and the mobile app, so they read as one product.
  • Design for high-stakes, low-attention moments: alarm states, escalation paths, error and empty states, and data-dense views where a misread costs a customer their inventory.
  • Build production frontend code alongside our engineers — components, responsive layouts, and interaction states — and participate in code review.
  • Own UX-related support tickets and treat them as a signal, converting recurring friction into prioritized fixes.
  • Plan and conduct customer discovery, workflow research, concept testing, and post-release usability evaluation across representative user roles and customer environments. .
  • Partner with the Product & Delivery Lead and engineering: frame problems, conduct discovery, evaluate concepts, define MVP versus later, and translate validated decisions into deliverable work.
  • Contribute to the experience beyond the browser: on-device displays, onboarding, and the handoff between hardware, app, and support.
Required Skills
  • 5+ years designing and shipping digital products, with a portfolio that shows both the thinking and the finished craft.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and component-based frontend development, with the ability to build interactive prototypes and make limited production UI changes independently or in partnership with engineers.
  • Strong systems thinking: you've built or meaningfully extended a design system, not just designed screens.
  • Fluency in a modern design toolchain (Figma or equivalent) and in prototyping to communicate intent.
  • Experience designing data-dense interfaces — dashboards, tables, charts, monitoring, or admin tooling.
  • A track record of improving a mature product incrementally, not just greenfield design. You'll be working in a codebase with real history and real customers who can’t absorb disruption.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and responsive/mobile design.
  • Clear communication and the judgment to argue for a design decision, and to drop it when the evidence goes the other way.
  • Comfort being the only designer in the room: self-directed, pragmatic about scope, and able to build the function from scratch.
  • Strong information architecture and interaction-design skills, including experience organizing complex enterprise products with multiple user roles, organizational levels, permissions, configurations, and data relationships.
  • Experience planning and conducting user research, synthesizing evidence across participants and data sources, and translating findings into product decisions.
  • On-site in Indianapolis, M–F.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience designing products for healthcare, life sciences, industrial, or other regulated or quality-sensitive environments, where usability must coexist with requirements for accuracy, traceability, permissions, auditability, and procedural control.
  • Background designing for IoT, hardware, or physical-device ecosystems where the screen is only part of the product.
  • Experience with alerting, on-call, or monitoring products.
  • Native or cross-platform mobile design experience.
  • Prior experience as a first or early design hire.

We're looking for someone who wants to take the lead and establish what good looks like. If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
