The company operates a utility-as-API platform that enables any business, from automakers and solar providers to real estate companies, to offer their own integrated electricity plans. Rather than the traditional one-size-fits-all utility model, Light embeds affordable, renewable electricity into the products and services consumers already use. Examples include electric vehicles that come with unlimited home charging or solar panels bundled with grid backup energy. Having found meaningful traction, Light is now investing aggressively in growth and building the digital energy infrastructure for the next century of power.### The roleLight is hiring its second Product Designer, making this a foundational position in shaping how design operates at the company. You would own the full research-to-production design process across verticals and market expansion, working in a genuine design partnership with the existing design lead. The role exists to identify the moments in a customer journey that determine whether someone commits to an energy plan, and to design toward those moments. Because Light is still early enough for culture to be shaped, you would also help establish how the design team thinks, works, and holds itself to a quality standard.### What you would doYou would research new prospect audiences and existing partner programs to find where customers are most ready to act. You would identify the inflection points in a customer journey that actually move someone toward a decision, then design specifically toward those moments rather than mapping the full journey for its own sake. As Light expands into new geographies, you would help determine what needs to change in the product to serve both new customers and new partners. You would own the screens you touch and contribute to a shared quality standard through active critique with the design lead. You would also help build the research process the team operates from, including how participants are recruited, which methods are used at which stages, and how findings inform design direction. Within six months, success looks like having identified and acted on high-value inflection points across at least two focus areas, a forming design team culture with a shared quality bar and a research process the team actually uses, and cross-functional teams that trust your judgment.### What they are looking forLight is looking for someone who can drop into an unfamiliar category, figure out what actually matters to customers, and design from that insight rather than assumptions. You should think in inflection points, wanting to understand where a customer decides to commit or walk away, not just where they clicked. You would bring more than one research method and validate ideas before the company invests resources in shipping them. You would not be satisfied by the first direction and would explore a wide range of approaches before converging, with a portfolio that demonstrates that breadth. You should be comfortable working within an established design system and raising the quality bar through partnership and critique. You should be willing to be the person in the room who says the research says otherwise and be able to back it up. You should be able to establish a design game plan independently and bring others along on the thinking. The role requires 5 or more years of product design experience, or a portfolio that makes the years irrelevant.### Working arrangementsThis role is based in Austin, TX and is an in-office, collaborative position. Work-from-anywhere flexibility is available in July.
