Job description

About Us

Grid Status is revolutionizing the energy industry with a modern and open data analytics platform. Our mission is to provide accessible, actionable energy data to accelerate the energy transition.

In just two years, we've grown from zero to 20,000 monthly active users across all facets of the energy sector. Our data has been featured in reporting and analysis by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and the Federal Reserve. Thousands of users rely on our products, including renewable developers, asset operators, utilities, energy traders, and innovative startups.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a product-minded designer comfortable with 0 → 1 feature work to join our growing product and engineering team. As an early hire, you’ll play a crucial role in developing not just individual features, but our underlying design systems, language, and process as we scale. Our ideal candidate is excited about deep UX problems, tight-knit cross-functional collaboration, and leveraging data and feedback for rapid iteration.

Our product surface is wide, and we're shipping quickly. This means there's always a variety of exciting design problems to dig into, like:

  • Live, data-dense dashboards and reports with a variety of datasets

  • News-like qualitative analysis written by our team

  • Email newsletters, notifications, and alerts

  • Developer experience for API users

  • and many more

You should have experience designing for complex data in a business context in your existing portfolio, but you do not need prior experience with energy as long as you’re excited to learn!

Who you are

  • You have previously shipped multiple products using complex data in clear and actionable UIs

  • You focus on outcomes over tools or processes. You can comfortably move between levels of fidelity and artifacts depending on context.

  • You have a defined point of view on what makes effective, usable, and memorable software.

  • You’re a strong product thinker who can help bring structure to and illustrate ambiguous problem spaces, frame decisions clearly, and help others understand tradeoffs in user experience.

  • You’re a highly effective communicator, able to articulate design decisions clearly to a variety of audiences, tease out nuances in feedback, and effectively share work at various stages of completion.

What you’ll do

  • Design features end-to-end, iteratively building in close cross-functional collaboration with engineers, subject matter experts, and customer-facing teammates

  • Use a mix of written documents, mockups, and coded prototypes to communicate ideas from first principles and make decisions

  • Proactively identify, propose changes, and ship fixes for paper cuts and other quality issues

  • Help evolve our design language and system across product UI, brand, and data visualizations

  • Help evolve our approach to product design process as an organization
