Job description

Product Designer, Educator and Admin Experience
Who we are
About Subject

Subject is one of the fastest-growing education technology companies in the country, helping more than 1,000 schools deliver flexible, accredited learning to students nationwide. We're backed by Owl Ventures and Kleiner Perkins.

Recognized for our growth and innovation:

  • TIME's Top EdTech Companies (2026)
  • LinkedIn Top Startups (2025)
  • 135K+ subscribers on YouTube

Subject sits at the intersection of two of the most consequential shifts in education: AI, and the growing demand for flexible learning paths for students who don't fit the traditional classroom model. Subject isn't a commodity courseware vendor. It's an AI-powered K-12 curriculum company serving markets where the stakes for students are high and the need for better outcomes is urgent. For a designer, that means working on problems most of the industry hasn't solved yet: how AI shows up in a classroom, and how a tool built for a district feels like it was built for one teacher.

About the team

Subject is organized into focused pods, each owning one product surface end-to-end. The Educator and Admin pod owns everything the adults in a school touch: rostering and enrollment, gradebooks and progress views, intervention workflows, district configuration, and the reporting that proves outcomes to a school board.

Subject is B2B2C by design. Districts buy, teachers operate, students experience the result. This pod is where the buy and the operate happen.

Designers on this pod work at the intersection of craft and consequence. We collaborate closely with engineering, education, customer success, and school partners to deliver work that is not only beautiful, but measurably reduces the time educators spend using the platform instead of teaching.

What you'll do

As a Product Designer on the Educator and Admin pod, you'll own design across the teacher and district-facing surfaces of Subject: the operational layer that decides whether a school buys and renews. These are the most data-dense, multi-role, and trust-sensitive surfaces in our portfolio, each with its own audience, workflow, and definition of done.

You’ll operate with a high degree of autonomy: driving work from brief to launch, bringing clarity to loosely defined problems, and setting the quality bar for your focus areas. You’ll shape the patterns and components that make these surfaces scale across thousands of districts, and you’ll build the deep domain expertise that makes you the go-to partner for the teams you work alongside. This is a high‑ownership role for a designer who is equally at home leading a complex workflow redesign and sweating the details of a single table.

Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end design of the educator and admin surfaces, from early strategy through shipped feature, with minimal oversight
  • Drive clarity in ambiguous briefs by synthesizing educator research, usage data, district requirements, and technical constraints into a coherent point of view
  • Design for the full account: the district buyer who evaluates, the admin who configures, the teacher who runs it daily, and the student it lands on, and reconcile their competing needs into one system
  • Turn complex operational tasks into flows that feel obvious the first time: bulk actions, permissions, multi-step setup, exception handling, and the empty and error states nobody else thinks about
  • Develop and advance the Subject design system for dense, data‑heavy interfaces: tables, filters, dashboards, and reporting patterns that stay extensible and maintainable at scale
  • Design AI‑assisted educator workflows (grading assist, intervention recommendations, adaptive content controls) with a clear mental model of what the model can and cannot do, and design for trust: how a teacher understands, overrides, and audits what the system suggests
  • Use research, session recordings, support tickets, and usage data to ground your decisions and advocate for educators in every partner conversation
  • Actively contribute to team quality: share your expertise, set an example in critique, and help raise the standard of work across Subject
Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

  • 4+ years of product design experience, with the majority in B2B or B2B2C products
  • A strong visual craft: typography, color, layout, and motion, and you can explain why each choice serves the user and the product
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating shipped work on complex, data-dense, or workflow-heavy surfaces: dashboards, admin tools, multi-role permissions, reporting
  • Proven ability to own projects end-to-end and deep fluency in interaction design
  • Experience designing for multiple user types inside one account (buyer, admin, end user) and reconciling their needs
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity: you can generate a clear plan from a loose brief and bring partners along with you
  • Strong communication skills: your rationale is tight, your files are readable, and your handoffs don't require translation
  • Proficiency in Figma, experience working within component-based design systems, and fluency with AI design tools and workflows
  • Comfort with data: you read a dashboard, watch session recordings, and change course based on what you find
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in Saas B2B or B2B2C products, or other products where the buyer, the operator, and the end user are different people
  • Familiarity with designing for regulated or trust-sensitive contexts (education, healthcare, finance) where clarity and auditability are design requirements
  • Experience designing AI-assisted workflows where a human reviews, overrides, or approves what the system proposes
  • Fluency with front-end development workflows: you can collaborate meaningfully with product builders and engineers on what's possible and what's right
  • Experience designing for accessibility requirements, including WCAG compliance for public-sector customers
  • A track record of advancing shared design patterns, systems, or tooling, not just using them
How we work

We care deeply about craft, and we move with urgency and focus. Enterprise-grade does not mean enterprise-looking: admin tools at Subject deserve the same taste as the student app. We seek feedback early and often, because design gets stronger through iteration.

We keep our users front and center, whether that’s a first-year teacher setting up her gradebook, a counselor triaging at-risk students, or a district administrator preparing a board report. And we take pride in shipping work that is not only beautiful and precise, but delivers clear, measurable impact: shipped is not the goal, a teacher saving hours a week is.

We value ownership, directness, and resilience. You’ll do well here if you thrive in end-to-end responsibility, bring strong intuition without losing sight of the data, and are energized by complex problems that require both strategic clarity and exceptional craft. AI is already in your workflow, not on your wishlist: you use Claude, Cursor, Figma AI, or equivalent daily.

The commitment we're looking for

This role requires exceptional dedication because students deserve our absolute best. We need someone who:

  • Lives the mission and treats student and district outcomes as real stakes
  • Thrives in intensity and takes pride in building something from nothing
  • Works with presence: Los Angeles office, 5 days/week
  • Can commit to 60 hours/week: this is a high-output, high-ownership role and the pace reflects the ambition

We’re not looking for people who tolerate long hours. We’re looking for people who find meaning in building something that matters this much.

Pay and benefits

The annual base salary range for this role is $120,000 to $140,000 based on experience and qualifications.

Additional benefits include premium health coverage, gym membership, daily meals, and top hardware.

We look forward to hearing from you

At Subject, we’re looking for people with passion, grit, and integrity. You’re encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn’t precisely match this description. If you want to design the tools that teachers and districts run their classrooms on, and prove those tools work in real schools, Subject is where you do that work.
