Job description

Product Marketing Manager, Founding role, Product team
About Subject

Subject is one of the fastest-growing education technology companies in the country, helping more than 1,000 schools deliver flexible, accredited learning to students nationwide. We're backed by Owl Ventures and Kleiner Perkins.

Recognized for our growth and innovation:

  • TIME's Top EdTech Companies (2026)
  • LinkedIn Top Startups (2025)
  • 135K+ subscribers on YouTube

Subject sits at the intersection of two of the most consequential shifts in education: AI, and the growing demand for flexible learning paths for students who don't fit the traditional classroom model. Subject isn't a commodity courseware vendor. It's an AI-powered K-12 curriculum company serving markets where the stakes for students are high and the need for better outcomes is urgent. For a product marketer, that means a differentiated story to tell.

About the team

Product Marketing at Subject lives inside Product. You report to the Head of Product & Design and work directly with the pods building what you'll take to market. You're part of the roadmap conversation, the launch, and what happens after.

In K-12, the person who buys Subject, the person who runs it, and the person who learns on it are three different people. The superintendent signs the contract. The teacher opens it every morning. The student is the one whose life changes. Product marketing at Subject is how one product speaks to all three.

You'll be the first product marketer at Subject, and you'll define how the function works. You own what faces outward: the story, the market, the sale.

What you'll own
Positioning and insight
  • Positioning and messaging. One source of truth for who Subject is for, why it's different, and how we talk about AI, credit recovery, and outcomes. Sales, CS, and marketing all pull from it
  • Competitive intelligence. Know the field, keep the battlecards current, brief Sales and Product when something changes
  • Market and customer insight. Sit in on sales calls and QBRs, talk to teachers and district leaders, and bring what you hear back to the pods as input for the roadmap
Launches and product updates
  • GTM launch plans. Positioning, proof points, launch narrative, and the coordination across Sales, CS, and marketing that makes a release land
  • Product updates. Every release gets a story. You write it and present it, so districts understand what shipped and why it matters to them
  • Newsletters. You own the cadence and voice of what goes out to our schools. Something a teacher actually opens
  • The internal pitch. You bring each release to Sales first. Enablement sessions, decks, battlecards, and the answers to the questions that come up on calls
  • Enablement as a system. New rep onboarding on the product, a current pitch deck, a library of proof points and objection responses. The goal is that Sales can sell without you in the room
  • Case studies, testimonials, and outcome data packaged so a principal can take it to the board. In K-12, renewals often come down to whether the champion has something to show.
  • Conference and event content. Session pitches, booth messaging, the demo narrative.
What we’re looking for
Must have
  • 5+ years in product marketing, most of it in B2B or B2B2C
  • You’ve owned launches end-to-end and enabled a sales team to sell what shipped
  • You’ve worked inside or alongside a product org and changed a roadmap decision with customer or market insight
  • You write clearly and present well. You can explain a technical feature to a school board member and present to conferences
  • You use data to find opportunities and to show your work moved pipeline, adoption, or retention
  • You're comfortable with a long, multi-stakeholder sales cycle where the buyer and the user are different people
Nice to have
  • You've positioned AI features in a category where trust is the first question
  • You've been a PM, or a PMM formally embedded in a product org
  • You've built a product marketing function from zero
  • AI tools are already part of how you research, draft, and monitor the market
How we work

We care about craft and we move fast. Feedback comes early and often, from the people who build the product, the people who sell it, and the people who use it. Launched is not the goal. Adopted is.

You’ll do well here if you take full ownership, trust your instincts without ignoring the data, and like problems that need both strategy and execution. AI is already in your workflow, not on your wishlist.

The commitment

Students deserve our best, and this role reflects that. We need someone who:

  • Lives the mission and treats student and district outcomes as real stakes
  • Takes pride in building something from nothing
  • Owns the work end-to-end: insight, story, launch, adoption
  • Works from our Los Angeles office, 5 days a week
  • Can commit to 60 hours a week. This is a high-output, high-ownership role and the pace reflects the ambition

We're not looking for people who tolerate long hours. We're looking for people who find meaning in building something that matters this much.
