Job Summary:
The Produce Clerk provides prompt, courteous, and efficient customer service, maintains the produce department's presentation, and assists with inventory and stocking.
Essential Functions:
- Follow approved procedures for receiving products, pricing, and stocking to ensure accuracy, product quality, and proper rotation.
- Replenish the produce department's fruits, vegetables, and other items as assigned.
- Move products in and out of storage areas for proper display and storage, including refrigerating storage boxes.
- Assist in maintaining inventory control to ensure freshness, quality, and turnover for maximum sales, minimizing out-of-stock or overstocked products.
- Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy and help control damaged goods.
- Monitor expiration dates to ensure only fresh products are available for purchase.
- Maintain a clean, attractive, and friendly department environment to ensure a positive customer experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge:
- Basic understanding of produce products and handling techniques.
- Familiarity with retail stocking procedures and inventory management.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to food handling.
Skills:
- Basic math skills for weighing and pricing.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with customers and team members.
Abilities:
- Attention to detail for accuracy in stocking and labeling.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations, handle multiple demands, and work with diverse personalities.
- Make informed decisions quickly, often under pressure.
- Genuinely desire to meet and exceed customer expectations.
- Perform physical tasks, including stocking, lifting boxes, and standing for extended periods.
Physical Requirements:
- Stand and walk for extended periods, typically 8-hour shifts.
- Lift and carry items up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Perform repetitive motions such as reaching, bending, and handling products.
- Maintain clear communication with customers and team members.
- Move quickly and efficiently to assist customers and manage workload.
- Work in a fast-paced environment with physical stamina.
Work Conditions:
- Work hours vary; availability required on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
- Indoor, climate-controlled environment with potential damp or humid conditions.
- Work within various store sections, including sales floor, backrooms, and refrigerated areas.
- Dress code includes professional attire, store-issued shirts, hats, jackets, or personal shirts in black, burgundy, or blue, in good condition.
- May be exposed to moving mechanical parts and cleaning chemicals.
- Noise level is usually low to moderate, with occasional loud periods.
- Constant interaction with customers and team members in a fast-paced setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No prior experience required; on-the-job training provided. Retail or customer service experience is a plus.
