Dominion Engineering, Inc. in Reston, VA is seeking a Procurement Engineer to support sourcing and procurement across project lifecycles, from quotes and estimates during proposal development to design inputs and material requisitions during fabrication.

The role requires evaluating vendors’ capabilities, coordinating with project teams, reviewing specifications, and communicating technical and commercial requirements to manufacturers, with ABET‑accredited STEM credentials preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience evaluating suppliers, quotes, and lead times for custom components.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings and interpret tolerances and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate production capacity, process capabilities, and vendor strengths to collect pricing and lead times.
  • Interface with Project Coordinators and track procurement status.
  • Coordinate with Procurement, Quality, and PM to resolve non-conforming components.
  • Participate in design meetings to advise on manufacturability and cost trade-offs.
  • Develop and review engineering specs and purchasing documents.

Job description

The Procurement Engineer role provides support on projects related to sourcing and procurement of materials. They contribute at multiple stages of a project life-cycle, from the gathering of quotes and cost estimates during proposal development, to applying technical judgment to sourcing and specification development during design, and finally to issuing requisitions for materials during the fabrication phase.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluate the production capacity, process capabilities, and technical strengths of both domestic and international vendors within an approved supply chain. Interpret released fabrication drawings, including tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes, to collect accurate pricing and lead time quotes for custom components. Independently answer technical questions associated with the quoting or fabrication process and select vendors based on demonstrated technical capability and project requirements.
  • Interface with Project Coordinators on projects with a significant procurement component and track procurement status across the project timeline.
  • Act as central point of contact across different departments (e.g., Procurement, Quality, Project Management) to coordinate resolution of non-conforming components, including provision of technical dispositions to external vendors.
  • Participate in design meetings and provide engineering-informed input on manufacturability, material selection, availability, and cost trade-offs to assist project members in making design decisions.
  • Develop and technically review engineering specifications and purchasing documentation for accuracy and manufacturability.
Additional Functions:

Subject to company and project needs, the Procurement Engineer may be called on to perform other functions suited to his/her expertise, including but not limited to:

  • Performing Receipt Inspections for custom-fabricated components.
  • Supporting internal business initiatives.
  • Ability to actively listen during meetings, understand project context, and self-identify appropriate supportive actions.
  • Working technical knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, welding, casting, forming) and their associated capabilities, tolerances, and costs.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering fabrication and assembly drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical and commercial requirements to manufacturers.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple different procurement tasks according to stated project timelines.
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work at a desk/computer. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to navigate industrial environments while wearing PPE, including climbing over and around obstacles, and up and down stairs or ladders. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.

Required Education, Experience, Certification and Licenses:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent engineering/manufacturing experience.
