Job summary

Georgia-Pacific is seeking a Process Safety Engineer for our Pennington, Alabama facility. You will drive process safety initiatives, provide technical direction, and influence leadership on risk reduction and regulatory compliance.

The role focuses on leading risk assessments, applying PBM principles, and mentoring site personnel to embed process safety into daily operations. Collaboration with the Chemical Process Safety Manager and SH&E leadership is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, Safety, related field.
  • 3+ years in process safety, process engineering, mechanical integrity, or reliability in a PSM-regulated operation.
  • Experience with 29 CFR 1910.119 and 40 CFR 68.
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).

Responsibilities

  • Provide process safety leadership at the site and influence the Leadership Team.
  • Lead risk assessments and PHAs to identify and evaluate hazards.
  • Apply Process Safety Competency and PBM principles across affected roles.
  • Manage process safety information including P&ID's and PFD's.
  • Support incident investigations and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Georgia-Pacific has an exciting opportunity for a talented Process Safety Engineer at our Pennington, Alabama facility. The Process Safety Engineer will be part of the process safety team and report directly to the Chemical Process Safety Manager. The selected individual will drive and support value-based strategies, provide technical direction, and influence leadership for process safety.

Our Team

Georgia-Pacific’s Naheola Mill is a manufacturing site for the company’s well-known consumer products business. More than 950 employees produce a wide range of products for the consumer business, including Angel Soft® bath tissue, Sparkle® paper towels, as well as bleached paperboard used in Dixie® paper cups and plates.

The mill is the largest employer in the community and is engaged in supporting community outreach, workforce development and education. The area is a sportsman’s paradise with world-class hunting for deer, turkey and other small game and is bounded on the east by the Tombigbee River which provides such recreation as freshwater fishing, boating and water skiing. Residents of this area enjoy the mild climate, the low cost of living, and is an easy drive to the many resort communities and soft white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast.

What You Will Do
  • Provide process safety influential leadership for the site, working with the mill’s Leadership Team, with specific focus on ensuring that mill process safety systems reduce risk and ensure compliance
  • Foster process safety ownership within the organization through leadership, coordination, and coaching in keeping with risk-based process safety and Principle Based Management (PBM®)
  • Lead risk assessments at the facility for anticipating, identifying and evaluating hazards as well as more formal PHAs
  • Apply the principles of Process Safety Competency to make process safety an operating discipline within all affected roles at the mill
  • Assist S&H leadership with the development of short and long-term process safety objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that prioritize and mitigate risks
  • Utilize metrics to monitor process safety compliance
  • Review and validate the following: process equipment design specifications, safeguard specifications, and operating procedures
  • Support and lead process incident investigations and develop effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Manage the mill's process safety information including P&ID's, PFD's, chemical compatibility matrix, as well as review new chemical approval requests
  • Serving as a mentor for technical and hourly employees to make process safety an everyday mission for continuous improvement in daily operations
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, Safety, related engineering or technical field
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in a process engineering, process safety, mechanical integrity, or reliability role within a PSM regulated operation
  • Experience with Process Safety regulations, specifically 29 CFR 1910.119 and 40 CFR 68
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a process safety role or equivalent engineering experience with responsibility for a PSM regulated asset or operation
  • Experience with Mechanical Integrity processes
  • Experience in the pulp & paper industry
  • Experience and knowledge of how manufacturing processes work and basic equipment operation within the processes
