Job summary

Lilly is seeking a Process Safety Engineer at its Foundry operations in Kentucky. You will support PHAs, develop process safety information, and help manage changes across chemicals and equipment.

You will collaborate with engineers and scientists to ensure safe startups and ongoing operations. Responsibilities include performing process hazard analyses, supporting PSSR, leading incident investigations, and delivering training and audits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related field.
  • 2+ years in process engineering or process safety in pharma/chemical.
  • Experience with PHA methodologies (HAZOP or What-If).
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team and communicate technical concepts clearly.
  • Willingness to work in a role with PPE and 24/7 operations.

Responsibilities

  • Support preparation and execution of process hazard reviews and PSAs.
  • Gather process safety information and verify safeguard descriptions.
  • Drive resolution of PHR action items with engineering, operations, maintenance, and tech services.
  • Support PSSR execution and compliance activities.
  • Own elements of the Foundry Process Safety Management program.
  • Provide front-line process safety support during routine operations, startups, and shutdowns.
  • Support event investigations and corrective actions.

Job description

  • Support preparation and execution of equipment and chemistry Process Hazard Reviews (PHRs)
  • Gather process safety information, verify safeguard descriptions, and confirm scope coverage across process areas
  • Drive resolution of PHR action items with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Technical Services
  • Support Operations-led Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) execution
  • Own and maintain assigned elements of the Foundry Process Safety Management program
  • Provide front-line support on process safety questions during routine operations, troubleshooting, nonroutine activities, shutdowns, and startups
  • Support generation of process safety information, including chemical reactivity data, equipment design information, and safe operating limits
  • Support Management of Change reviews for new products and process or equipment changes
  • Complete process safety engineering calculations and models with senior technical review
  • Support event investigations using root cause analysis and contribute to corrective and preventive actions
  • Support process safety and emergency awareness training and communications
  • Support site self-assessments and internal audits, including evidence preparation and gap closure tracking
  • Contribute to a speak-up culture empowering employees and contractors to stop work
  • Work closely with scientists and engineers introducing new chemistry and equipment configurations at the Lilly Medicine Foundry
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in a Process Engineering or Process Safety Engineering role in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role
  • Experience participating in Process Hazard Analyses using HAZOP or What-If methodologies
  • Familiarity with reactive chemistry hazard evaluation, overpressure protection, and relief system basics
  • Genuine technical curiosity about chemistry and chemical engineering and interest in building expertise in process safety
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy in execution
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a cross-functional team
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills, with ability to prioritize competing tasks and drive them to completion on schedule
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to explain technical requirements to non-specialist audiences
  • Comfort working in an environment with a high rate of change
  • Tasks require entering manufacturing and laboratory areas and wearing appropriate PPE
  • Must carry a cell phone because the position supports 24-hour operations
