HF Sinclair is seeking a Process Safety Engineer in El Dorado, KS who will be responsible for the development, implementation, execution, and monitoring of key Process Safety programs and systems for HF Sinclair. This role supports safe, reliable, and profitable refinery operations by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate standards, and recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP).

Basic Function

HF Sinclair is seeking a Process Safety Engineer in El Dorado, KS who will be responsible for the development, implementation, execution, and monitoring of key Process Safety programs and systems for HF Sinclair. This role supports safe, reliable, and profitable refinery operations by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate standards, and recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP).

Job Duties
  • Provide day-to-day Process Safety support to refinery operations and engineering teams
  • Serve as the refinery Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) Technical Authority
  • Perform and maintain monthly performance metric reporting for Process Safety programs and systems
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and presentations on developing and evolving Process Safety initiatives
  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and program owner for the following Process Safety programs and systems:
    • Pressure Safety Valve (PSV) and Flare Management
    • Safe Operating Limits (SOL) Program
    • Facility Siting Program
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Program
    • Maximum Intended Inventory (MII) Program
  • Serve as a key contributor to the HF Alky API 751 Site Team and participate in fleetwide communities of practice
  • Participate in refinery Process Safety audits and assessments
  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) action item tracking and closure, including participation in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) as required
  • Actively contribute to the fleetwide community of practice for Process Safety Engineers and PSV Management
  • Perform special assignments or additional tasks as assigned by management
Experience
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a refinery or petrochemical environment required
  • Minimum of 2+ years in a Process Safety support role preferred
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and refinery operations required
  • Experience leading or facilitating PHAs, MOCs, and Incident Investigations preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence across disciplines
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Education Level

A minimum of a bachelor’s engineering degree is required.

Required Skills
  • Proficiency in OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Program (40 CFR Part 68)
  • Strong understanding of PHA methodologies, relief system design, Safe Operating Limits, and root cause analysis
  • Thorough understanding of P&ID symbology, interpretation, and presentation techniques
  • Recognized technical expert within area of specialty with the ability to stay current on emerging technologies and industry practices
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to apply engineering judgment to complex Process Safety challenges
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) and familiarity with commonly used engineering and data management software
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

None.

Work Conditions

Office and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, wet and/or oil contaminated conditions, at both below grade and elevated positions, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted).
