Job summary

BiOrigin Specialty Products, based in East Hartford, CT, is seeking a Process & Quality Engineer to optimize manufacturing processes and drive continuous improvement across the mill. You will enhance product quality, reduce waste, and improve efficiency while upholding safety standards and customer satisfaction.

The role requires a bachelor’s in a technical field, 1–3 years in a continuous manufacturing environment, and strong data analysis skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pulp & Paper Engineering, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret large datasets and identify trends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word; advanced data analysis skills preferred.
  • Experience with PARCview and JD Edwards (JDE) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead continuous improvement and process optimization initiatives to enhance safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute process trials, including defining objectives, evaluating costs and savings, and documenting results.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues using data analysis and root cause analysis to implement corrective actions.

We are seeking to hire a Process & Quality Engineer for our East Hartford, CT paper mill. This role plays a key role in optimizing manufacturing processes, improving product quality, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across the mill. This position is responsible for reducing waste, enhancing operational efficiency, and implementing sustainable process improvements that lower manufacturing costs while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.

What we need from you:

Process Optimization & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead continuous improvement and process optimization initiatives to enhance safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Identify improvement opportunities through collaboration with operations, maintenance, management, customers, and industry best practices.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute process trials, including defining objectives, evaluating costs and savings, assessing risks, documenting results, and recommending implementation strategies.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing and process issues using data analysis, chemical and physical testing, root cause analysis, and statistical methods to identify and implement corrective actions.
  • Reduce controllable waste, broke, off-quality production, and unplanned downtime through process improvements, standardization, and operator training.
  • Establish, maintain, and optimize process centerline parameters to ensure consistent equipment and product performance.
  • Monitor production, quality, raw material usage, and cost metrics to proactively identify trends and implement preventive actions.
  • Optimize production recipes and operating parameters to improve efficiency while maintaining product quality and customer specifications.
  • Support the identification, justification, and implementation of capital and non-capital improvement projects.

Quality Systems & Product Safety

  • Serve as the technical lead for the mill's Quality Management System (QMS) and Product Safety programs.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve quality procedures, work instructions, specifications, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure quality testing equipment is calibrated, maintained, and capable of producing accurate and reliable results.
  • Train and support operations personnel on quality standards, testing methods, and process control practices.
  • Partner with production teams to resolve process variability and maintain compliance with product specifications.
  • Lead Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality audit activities to ensure ongoing customer audit readiness.
  • Investigate customer complaints by performing root cause analyses and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Conduct internal quality audits and drive continuous improvement initiatives based on audit findings and performance metrics.

Product Development & Technical Support

  • Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Customer Technical teams to develop new products and improve existing products based on customer and market requirements.
  • Develop and maintain product quality specifications and manufacturing recipes to ensure consistent product performance.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate product qualification trials, documenting results and providing technical recommendations for commercialization or process improvements.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing by analyzing product performance, identifying process improvements, and resolving quality-related issues.
  • Analyze process capability, quality trends, and customer feedback to drive ongoing product and process improvements.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Sales to improve manufacturing performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Utilize Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies to eliminate waste and improve process capability.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical documentation, and training materials to support sustainable process improvements.
  • Present technical findings, project updates, and recommendations to plant leadership and cross-functional teams.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pulp & Paper Engineering, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years of experience in a continuous manufacturing or industrial production environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word; advanced data analysis skills are strongly preferred.
  • Experience with PARCview and JD Edwards (JDE) is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large datasets, identify trends, and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to employees at all levels of the organization, from production floor personnel to senior leadership.
  • Knowledge of papermaking processes, testing methods, and quality data interpretation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Work Environment Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily works in a temperature-controlled office environment with frequent time spent in a manufacturing facility.
  • Regular exposure to a mill environment, including heat, humidity, dust, noise, and other typical industrial conditions.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional extended workdays or weekend coverage as needed to support operations.
  • Minimal travel is required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and safely navigate uneven walking surfaces.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial manufacturing environment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, and other PPE as required.
