Job summary

BiOrigin Specialty Products is seeking an Environmental & Process Engineer for our East Hartford paper mill. You will lead environmental compliance, manage water and air systems, and drive continuous improvement while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure safe, efficient operations.

The role emphasizes training, regulatory reporting, and hands-on involvement in the production process to advance sustainability and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the mill’s water and air environmental systems, ensuring full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Coordinate sample collection, laboratory testing, and all required reporting to state and federal EPA agencies.
  • Monitor daily operation of the mill wastewater systems and provide operator training, implementing continuous-improvement practices to optimize performance.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all mill permits, including renewals, applications, and environmental/spill response plans.
  • Collaborate with staff to identify and resolve issues related to safety, environmental performance, quality, production, and cost.
  • Oversee raw material usage, especially within stock preparation—and provide technical guidance to beater room personnel to ensure correct use of pulp, recycled fiber, chemicals, and related materials.
  • Serve as the Process Engineer for water treatment and stock preparation operations, offering training and information on all equipment and processes within the area of responsibility.
  • Optimize water treatment and stock preparations process equipment utilizing current best practices including automation ideas to be implemented in coordination with process controls engineer.
  • Fully engage in safety programs and meetings, including safety talks, audits, and crew meetings.
  • Coordinate the mill’s chemical and waste safety programs, providing training on chemical and hazardous waste handling, disposal procedures, manifest accuracy, and required recordkeeping.
  • Participate in the on-call manager rotation

The Environmental & Process Engineer is responsible for leading environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of the paper mill. This role develops, implements, and modernizes environmental systems and programs, drives continuous improvement in environmental performance, and ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Reporting directly to the Mill Manager, the Environmental Engineer partners with cross-functional teams to provide technical leadership while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and proactive compliance management.

What we need from you:

  • Troubleshooting skills and ability to develop and administer corrective actions

  • Good communication skills – both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve Continuous Improvement
