Qualifications

• High School Diploma plus 2 years experience or an Associate's degree.
• Experience in a food processing area with knowledge of food safety regulations.
• Moderate to strong mechanical aptitude with industrial machinery.
• Ability to follow procedures with supervision and lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Assist with pet food production runs for product R&D.
• Load and operate industrial food machinery (grinders, mixers, extruders, ovens, conveyors).
• Conduct ingredient weighing, measuring, and batching per procedures.
• Perform sanitation tasks per schedule and SSOP requirements.
• Operate Process Lab equipment following SOPs and test methods.
• Prepare lab setup, ingredients, and equipment for each run.
• Document data on process conditions, ingredients, and inventory.
• Troubleshoot common issues in the work area.
• Maintain cleanliness of utensils, equipment, and machinery.

Job Title: R&D Process Lab Technician, Pet Food - 26-00247

Spherion Mid Ohio, in partnership with The JM Smucker Company, is seeking a Process Lab Technician for their Orrville pet food R&D Process Lab team. This position will begin as a 3-month contract role (with possible extension) and offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience working in a Fortune 500 company!

Position Overview:

As a Lab Technician your main duties will involve hands-on tasks like weighing and batching ingredients, and operating food production machinery. You'll also be a key part of maintaining sanitation standards in the R&D Process Lab. This role centers on following established procedures and working closely with your team to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist with pet food production runs in the context of product research and development
• Load and operate industrial food production machinery, such as: grinders, mixers, extruders, ovens, and conveyors
• Complete ingredient weighing, measuring, and batching tasks for production runs per existing procedures
• Complete sanitation tasks based on the production schedule that aligns with Standard Sanitization Procedures
• Operate Process Lab equipment while following standard operating procedures and relevant test methods
• Ensure proper lab setup, ingredient preparation, equipment operation, and clean-up for each production run
• Operate a variety of food processing, packaging, and testing equipment according to safety guidelines and requirements to execute experiments
• Document and report data for review and interpretation, including process conditions, ingredient codes, inventory levels, and other relevant information as needed
• Recognize and troubleshoot typical problems within the work area
• Clean and sanitize utensils, equipment, and machinery
• We utilize multiple ingredients in the Process Lab. The potential candidate cannot have any known aversions or adverse reactions to food materials; specifically known allergies and raw, uncooked materials.

Requirements:

• High School Diploma is required plus 2 years working experience, or an Associate's degree
• Experience in a food processing area with a working knowledge of food safety regulations is preferred
• Moderate to strong mechanical aptitude: comfortable working with industrial machinery and equipment
• Ability to work within established procedures with a moderate degree of supervision
• Capable of performing a range of day-to-day activities such as operating food production equipment and using standard food cleaning chemicals to complete SSOP tasks
• Ability to lift 50lbs
• Capable of evaluating and selecting solutions from established options to make day-to-day decisions
• Collaboration, information sharing, and proactive engagement with others to meet team goals
• Compliance with all safety, health, environmental requirements, including OSHA rules, company GMP/GLP, and other Food Safety/QA requirements
• Accurate measurement and transfer of ingredients for experiments and conversion of ingredients to finished goods, per instructions
• Comfortable working on a computer: data entry, documentation, entering quality check information
• Ability to work independently and identify upcoming tasks
• Machine operation or manufacturing experience

Education:

High School Diploma plus a minimum of 2 years working experience is required, or an Associate's degree

Compensation:

$20/hour (approximately $41,600 annually)

Schedule and Location:

This position offers 1st shift full time hours, Monday - Friday, 7am-3:30pm. This position will work 100% on-site at The Smucker Company campus in Orrville, Ohio.
